Invisible Birmingham

Invisible Birmingham

Historian Ben Waddington is leading a Brum walking tour of sights and buildings inspired by his article ‘Invisible Architecture’ from Issue One of Dirty Bristow magazine. It’s based on the differences in what you see when you look up, rather than down. He says in his piece: “Take a walk down New Street. The challenge is to get where you need to be without being waylaid by market researchers, religious groups, animal rights zealots, charity collectors in pincer formation, personality testers, Big Issue sellers on their last copy, or the unlucky folk needing just 20p towards their train fare. Even if you successfully run this gauntlet, you are never out of the magnetic field of every shop window display, carefully arranged to take your attention and unfold your money. One direction you cannot afford to look is upward. Photo by Gordon Eightball. The impression is that it is a modern arrangement of concrete blocks put up in the sixties at the expense of Victorian splendour. The reality is very different: certainly there are some recent buildings but above the ground floor is mostly rich Victorian brickwork, colourful faience, terracotta, sculpture and ornate ironwork. It is interesting to watch the...

Love at the Frankfurt market….. If you are looking for love in Birmingham, there are many ways for you to meet that special someone in time for Christmas at the Frankfurt market! At the bandstand: Once the band is playing a catchy tune, offer your hand to whoever has caught your eye and let your hair down! At the Gluhwein stall: Break the ice over a mug of hot wine. At the German sausage stand: Offer to share your sausage with a stranger. Have fun and good luck! ;)

Reaching out from beyond the grave…… Sorry, that’s a rubbish intro! But have you heard what has come to town?! It’s the controversial Bodies Revealed exhibition and it’s being held at the Custard Factory in Digbeth. From the website: Using real human specimens, painstakingly prepared and respectfully displayed The Bodies Revealed exhibition lets visitors of all ages explore deep within the human body in a way that informs but doesn’t overwhelm. It opens today and is running until January, maybe longer if the demand is there. I got a sneak preview of the exhibition at the press day on Wednesday, and it really is a unique way to view and learn more about the human body. I found it fascinating and a bit surreal. If you would like to see more photos, pop over to my blog. It’s was very interesting subject to photograph, if not a little unnerving when I found myself getting a little too close to one of the bodies…..! Have a fab Halloween weekend! See you next week :)

Buses 28 and 67 will also get you there. 5pm – Gates/funfair open 7pm – Bonfire lighting 8pm – Fireworks and music 10pm – Event ends On another note, I’m pleased to announce my new website! ArtsFest – What to do?

I’ll no doubt do another long an rambling post on “what should be done” with ArtsFest (next weekend chappies) as a whole, but here I want you to collectively tell me what I should go see. You see, the problem with ArtsFest is that it’s BIG (the “biggest” – not the best – free arts festival in the UK) and not particularly structured — I think curated is the word we’re dancing round. It’s also mostly full of people doing their thang for nowt, so there aren’t many (any almost) names you will have heard of. So it’s impossible (especially on paper) to get a good idea of what’s worth seeing. But here’s my plan — the vast majority of artists are Brummies, so by the rules of networks someone here must know almost all of them (or know someone, who knows etc…). And let’s face it, we know when our mates are any good. Don’t expect you to say anyone you know personally isn’t worth seeing (if you can’t say anything nice), but if they are then tell us all here in the comments. The Big Paws is going to send studio dogsbody Dylan to report on what you tell...

Stuff what is on this weekend

I dislike groupings of things, I like to be able to pick an choose my own stuff – be that food from a buffet, items from a website via RSS feeds, or cultural events. Festivals work well when they’re curated by someone with a clear vision, not when they do a land grab and pull anything vaguely related that might have been happening anyway under their cloak. Flatpack doesn’t attempt to include the new Spiderwoman film at the ODEON in their programme, Supersonic doesn’t list every metal gig in the Midlands as part of the fest. That works. The idea of having a “London 2012 Open Weekend” where things unrelated to sport, or to London, or to each other are on doesn’t for me. Especially as they may well have been happening anyway. That sort of annoys me, because individually they’re all interesting things. So here they are, don’t let Sebastian Coe and Boris Johnson put you off: Made in Birmingham: 24 – 26 July 2009 – all day. Exhibition exploring Birmingham’s Victorian manufacturing heritage. Venue: Centenary Square, Broad Street, Birmingham, B3 3HQ. Tickets: Free Admission. Amplifying the Map : 25 July 2009, 11am – 1pm. Rediscover familiar places...

021 in the Area

021 in the Area

The makers of the spangly Fused magazine have gone all What’s On-y. Which is good, because: a) What’s On was never very cool, & b) it’s shut down. Area is the new “pocket sized” (or A6 in grown-up terms) “pocket guide” to what’s going on in and around Brum. It’s going to be monthly, although the first issue is a July/August double issue as “everyone’s on holiday and not much goes on”. It looks lovely. It’s got listings and writerly things from top people such a Danny Smith (whose new “wordcast” you should check out). It looks like this: And for those of you not hip enough (myself included) to be anywhere it’s distributed the first issue is online (and I link directly to page 18 because I wrote it, and I’m vain).
