Buy 365 days of Brum, get one free

It’s that time of next year again, when in a flagrant attempt to pay for all the incidental costs of B:iNS we unleash the Birmingham:It’s Not Shit Calendar on the suspecting public. It is, we’ve seen calendars in the shops. As always it features 13 shots of real Brum, with no spin and only a tiny few adjustments in Photoshop to try and make it look warm in the summer months (well did you try getting pictures of the sun this year?). While it isn’t all pretty, it at least isn’t 12 shots of canalside living. It includes, the beach under Spaghetti Junction, Mr Egg, The Pantomime Horse Grand National and you can see tiny versions of the inside pictures here. We’ve got two versions for sale from Lulu.com, a full height version at £12.99 (cover pictured) and a slightly cheaper folded version at £7.99. Both include all your Bank Holidays, as well as a few special B:iNS chosen dates and anniversaries. (There’s also one in our Cafepress shop might be cheaper with the dollar exchange rate being over 2-1, have a look see what you think. This one doesn’t have special dates, just normal holidays.) It’s a perfect...

hot hot heat

Marketing Birmingham have lauched a new listings website with the odd name Birmingham feel the heat (it’s something to do with their new campaign that uses thermal imaging photos). The site is the work of 3form, and as such looks as clean and fresh (and usable!) as their other work – some of the colours are very hard to decipher (the white on yellow that represents ART, for example), but I’m guessing that was a marketing rather than design lead. It remains to see whether this will take off, and events listing sites are dependant on keeping up to date – but despite not having full details of Artsfest (too much to hope, we’ve been looking everywhere!) it seems already well-stocked. To add your own event you need to email them rather that add it yourself – so let’s hope that they let events of every size, and organiser through regardless of perceived cultural worth. via upyerBrum

All quiet on the Brum front?

It’s gone very quiet everywhere recently, I suppose people are either off on holiday or sheltering from the rain. There doesn’t seem to be much Brum news about, the Post are still wittering on about the Big Screen, the Mail well who knows mostly full of who Blues might be buying, the TV obsessed by the floods. So if you like, you could head over to the BiNS forums and do your own wittering. Or if you’re a facebook type, some kind soul (not us) has set up a BiNS group (you have to be logged in to see it I think). Of course, I might be wrong and there might be loads going on – but I’ve been too wrapped up in Talk Like a Brummie Day to notice. Feel free to enlighten…

You can get it here of course, or it’s direct RSS feed is here: What’s On In Brum. If you can think of any other listings feeds that should be added, drop us a line or add a comment.

up yer Brum :: promoting the best of Birmingham on the web

We all love Birmingham, well at least we think that it’s not shit. And there’s a lot of great Brum stuff that you might never get to hear about – we can’t be everywhere (although we try) and some stuff might not be to our, very distinctive, tastes. What we need is some kind of way that everyone gets the chance to promote their favourite things about Brum… what we need is www.upyerbrum.com You can submit a web link to upyerbrum for any story which shows Birmingham’s true greatness. If others agree their votes will push the story to the top of the pile. Links could be a written story, a film, podcast or photo. You may have seen it on the BBC or a local newspaper site, on a blog or a school site, even written it yourself and put on the web. All that counts is that it shows something great about Birmingham. You can get voting and submitting, or just pop along to see what’s top of Brum’s pops. For those that get the whole web 2.0 thing it’s very much like digg – if you don’t give it a try. It’s fun!

a series of pipes, full of brum

i’ve been messing with then new “Yahoo! Pipes” – which is a geeks fun palace. You pick all sorts of web feeds (like this one, or ebay lisitings, or BBC news) and you can mix them up with logical connections and filters. I’ve already built one that finds pictures of bands in Brum, just quick like, but I’d be very impressed if any of our more geeky readers manage to do a B:iNS mashup, it’s over to you.
