Mega’s Wine Bar – Old Square / Priory Queensway – Birmingham Roundabout

"Whilst the name conjures-up images of trendy lounge lizards and laid-back jazz piano, Mega’s Wine Bar actually served-up a stream of local – and some not-so-local – indie, rock and alternative bands and was certainly a thriving gig venue on the circuit and was located above Mega-Active which, if memory serves me correctly, was a kind of indoor ’boutique’ market – that was located in the centre of the building seen above at the Junction with Corporation Street (to the right) and Old Square."

Let’s put the show on right, er, over there

Birmingham Rocks! (their exclamation) spreads the whispers that: Rumours abound that The Barfly will soon be taking over The Sanctuary and looking to bring in bigger gigs at the venue. Melody makers new venue

Club NME is re-launching in Brum on 7th February next year – so far so fast-decling-once-great-inky-trying-to-eek-every-last-bit-out-of-its-name, but it mentions that it will be housed  in “a brand new venue in Birmingham custom built for this type of Club Night”. Which, despite despairing of the odd capitalisation, made me go “woo hoo”! The venue is called “The Place I Love” and is apparently a sister venue to the Sunflower, and rumoured to have a capacity of about 200  (this information comes only from the interweb, so make of that what you will). Guessing from where the Sunflower is brings up a couple of possible venues, no-longer used bars around the Queensway area, but if anyone has any concrete ideas I’d be happy to know. Club NME has a myspace, for those that do.

Spree but no glee

The Polyphonic Spree are coming to Brum on 5 September (Thanks The Stirrer), WOO! The Spree are fantastic, trust me. Unfortunately it’s at the Glee Club, which can be a dreadful venue – the bar prices, seating, drinking up time (where they close while the act is on in order to ship you out the moment they finish), atmosphere – and often manages to suck the life out of comedy. I’ve been to a gig there before and (admittedly it was a ‘quirky singer-songwriter’) it was the quietest I’ve ever seen a gig venue. Don’t fancy the Spree’s chances of fitting 28 members on the stage – or the management’s chances of stopping people getting up for a boogie. Despite not liking the venue I rushed to book a ticket, where upon it took me four browsers across two computers to get the booking form to work (and surprisingly it was Safari on the Mac that I succeeded with in the end). Sort it out, please.
