Invisible Birmingham

Invisible Birmingham

Historian Ben Waddington is leading a Brum walking tour of sights and buildings inspired by his article ‘Invisible Architecture’ from Issue One of Dirty Bristow magazine. It’s based on the differences in what you see when you look up, rather than down. He says in his piece: “Take a walk down New Street. The challenge is to get where you need to be without being waylaid by market researchers, religious groups, animal rights zealots, charity collectors in pincer formation, personality testers, Big Issue sellers on their last copy, or the unlucky folk needing just 20p towards their train fare. Even if you successfully run this gauntlet, you are never out of the magnetic field of every shop window display, carefully arranged to take your attention and unfold your money. One direction you cannot afford to look is upward. Photo by Gordon Eightball. The impression is that it is a modern arrangement of concrete blocks put up in the sixties at the expense of Victorian splendour. The reality is very different: certainly there are some recent buildings but above the ground floor is mostly rich Victorian brickwork, colourful faience, terracotta, sculpture and ornate ironwork. It is interesting to watch the...

Alternative Birmingham Landmarks for an open top bus tour

Ben says: "I'd like to put together a list of places around the city (preferably the city centre) that hold personal resonances for people who've visited Birmingham, people who live, work and play here. And once I've got a list of places and visited them to vet the stories I'd like to conduct a walking tour." So go help fill this marvellous psychogeographical tour.

Ben Waddington's walking tours of Brum return at Plus + Festival

Ben has a wonderful knack of these tours, mixing history, design and a hint of psychogeography. There are a few types (sorry) of tours: "Digbeth Type Tour: Exploring use of typography and handwritten letterforms in industrial Digbeth side streets. The area's history revealed through its use of type. Baskerville's Birmingham: the history of Birmingham's most famous typographer, John Baskerville (1706 – 1775). Artifacts, locations and type specimens associated with Baskerville will be visited, around Birmingham City Centre. Blue Plaques tour: The history of Birmingham and of the Blue Plaque itself: changing and improving designs, layouts, type use &c. The tour also covers plaques other than Blue; many forms of wall mounted commemorative texts around the City Centre. City Type Tour: Birmingham history as shown through its typography. Civil, monumental and commercial use of typeforms will be explored in Birmingham City Centre."

I can see for miles, or you can

As part of the Climate Change Festival (nice stuff, but does it not sound a little like they’re celebrating climate change from the title) there’s a chance to go up to the top of the Rotunda this coming Monday (2nd June) with Nathan Cornish of Urban Splash. “an exclusive tour of the Rotunda which will include one of the penthouses, a duplex apartment and private terrace.” You gotta book (although given it’s in the middle of the work day, I can’t see it filling up) and you gotta book from here.

Jeff Lynne does not endorse SPAM

Jeff Lynne does not endorse SPAM

When people do jokes about how SPAM seems directly targeted to them it’s normally because they have a small penis. Let me share you a much odder form –  that I’ve being reliving at the rate of two or three a day to my various email addresses. May I gain your permission to send you some details on the upcoming British “ELO’s Great Hits” concerts of the Former ELEC. LIGHT ORCHESTRA and E.L.O. PT Two Classic Members, now referred to as THE ORCHESTRA? I would be grateful if you would visit http://www.eloformermembers.com/optin.php?email=xxxxxxxx to agree. These shows start on the 4th of March and you can review the schedule on the website www.orchestrafan.com to determine if you would like further details. Thanks so much, R.J  JOHNSON Permission Requests Now that’s direct marketing SPAM, who else do you know that would be interested (no enough to actually go, but interested) in the touring plans of a bunch of people that may have been in a band with Jeff Lynne at some point? And not even good people that have been in a band with Jeff Lynne (Dylan, George Harrision, Tom Petty, Bev Bevan…). Oh, and it looks like they’re playing at...

Fancy a hallmark holiday?

Industrial history buffs over at Made in Birmingham are trying to organise a trip round the Assay Office. It’s not a usual thing to do, so if you fancy going along have a look on their forum or contact them direct. They need enough numbers to make it cost-effective. Maybe you can ask them why the hallmark for Brum is the anchor when we couldn’t be further from the sea,  I bet they’ve never heard that one before…
