Help break a World Record this week

You may have heard me mention that I’ve been working on a project called The Big Picture, well it’s culminating in Brum this weekend with the unveiling of an artwork that should break the World Record for the largest photo mosaic ever. But, the world’s largest anything takes a lot of putting together, and for weeks now volunteers have been sticking photos together on the 288 panels that will make up the final piece. There are about 113,000 photos in all and still a lot of work to do. So, if you have any free time this week everyone working on the Big Picture would love to see you at Thinktank to help build this huge artwork. You can turn up at any time between 10am – 4pm each day until Thursday this week (if you’d like more details see the Big Picture site). Even if you can’t help out, you’d be very welcome at the unveiling on Saturday (23rd Aug) outside Millennium Point, the covers will come off at 2pm.

Go and look for that dinosaur

Birmingham Museum and Art gallery used to have a huge T-Rex in it, I loved it. It’s not in the Collections Centre in Nechells, but lots of other rarely seen BMAG artefacts are – and this weekend you’re allowed in to have a shufty and photograph them. It’s part of The Big Picture (disclaimer: I’m working on this), and the centre will be open – with photographic advice on hand – Saturday 5th April 10.00am – 3.00pm. More details on the Big Picture site.

People take pictures of each other, and other stuff

People take pictures of each other, and other stuff

Launching this week is a West Midlands-wide* project to collect as many photos together of Midlands life in 2008 as possible – The Big Picture. It’s based round a huge Flickr-ised gallery and apart from those of taste and decency (oh and permissions and copyright, the usual photos stuff) there aren’t any restrictions on what photos can be added. Doesn’t need to be arty, doesn’t need to be the best photo in the world – it’s photo democracy in action. It launches today, so go and have a look for yourself, you can log in to the site with a Flickr account and just add the images you want. If you haven’t got (or don’t want to get) a Flickr account there are other options too. There are a series of launch events around the region – ending in Brum, up Hurst St, on Friday afternoon, full details on the site – do drop by and say hello if you’re around. *The West Midlands in this case includes Stoke, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Hereford and Worcester, Coventry and Warwickshire as well as the more traditional Birmingham and The Black Country. Disclaimer: I’m working on this project, but rest assured I wouldn’t...
