Talk amongst yourselves

One of the first things I did when starting BiNS was to look for a free forum hosting site. The one I found was a bit rubbish, but it was free and I was on the dole. It worked though, and there has been all manner of wit and not-so-wit on the forums over the last 6-or-so years. But as more of the site started to revolve around the blog, the forums got a bit sidetracked. So much so that I would only remember to pop in every couple of weeks. The original forums became the online equivalent of the Mercat pub — open all hours and nice, but intimidating. So, we’ve got some new ones that have RSS feeds, tags and the like — it’s the acceptable face of regeneration. These new ones are like the Mercat, after a lick of paint, some windows put in and adding some sodding futuristic beer availability notification system. The old forums and posts aren’t gone, they’re still online as an archive, but I’ve stopped all posting there. You have to register to post on the new BiNS Talk — but that happens automagically, you don’t have to wait to be approved. When...

Buy 365 days of Brum, get one free

Buy 365 days of Brum, get one free

It’s that time of next year again, when in a flagrant attempt to pay for all the incidental costs of B:iNS we unleash the Birmingham:It’s Not Shit Calendar on the suspecting public. It is, we’ve seen calendars in the shops. As always it features 13 shots of real Brum, with no spin and only a tiny few adjustments in Photoshop to try and make it look warm in the summer months (well did you try getting pictures of the sun this year?). While it isn’t all pretty, it at least isn’t 12 shots of canalside living. It includes, the beach under Spaghetti Junction, Mr Egg, The Pantomime Horse Grand National and you can see tiny versions of the inside pictures here. We’ve got two versions for sale from Lulu.com, a full height version at £12.99 (cover pictured) and a slightly cheaper folded version at £7.99. Both include all your Bank Holidays, as well as a few special B:iNS chosen dates and anniversaries. (There’s also one in our Cafepress shop might be cheaper with the dollar exchange rate being over 2-1, have a look see what you think. This one doesn’t have special dates, just normal holidays.) It’s a perfect...

We’ve moved

If you got a feed full of posts this morning, sorry – it was the upshot of moving B:iNS from one host to another more spangly one. It’s done now, I hope with a minimum of lost links (in fact there’s loads more links now as I imported the vast majority of “old news” items from pre-the blog – they’re not that interesting I don’ t think). The new site has a much more coherent look (still ironing out the kinks) and a new header. Hope you like it. Of course new graphics often mean new t-shirts.

My Birmingham ‘Street Atlas’

My Birmingham ‘Street Atlas’

JB Birmingham Street Atlas : Originally uploaded by bounder. Roads, like music, crystallize memories. Here are some roads that make me remember. Why not make your own ‘street atlas’? See it in all it’s glory here I’m not saying why, or where they are – you can guess if you like. They are all in Brum tho’, I had to make a cut off somewhere and it might leave room for a follow-up that isn’t just Brum. It was actually quite an emotional experience in a couple of places (not to mention dangerous when standing in the midlle of the Pershore Rd to get ‘just the right angle’). See it as a flickr set. It’d be great if people made their own and we eventually got a shot of every road in Birmingham!

the stagemanaged “fight” between Brum and Manchester reaches a crescendo on Inside Out tonight on BBC ONE. What you won’t know – and might maybe care about – is that I’ll be on News 24 at around 12.30 tomorrow for a live interview all about it. Don’t go flippin’. UPDATE> and if i can get into town (three hours to get home!) for 9.20 tomorrow morning i’ll be on Breakfast News (bbc one i think)
