Milk and honey on Cannon Street

Milk and honey on Cannon Street

An unexpected treat this weekend, when the Invisible Architecture tour I was on stumbled across what might just prove to be a little independent gem. Shakes is a milkshake bar and coffee shop, it’s up Cannon Street almost oposite The Windsor and sort of behind Urban Outfitters. It does coffee and more usual stuff as well, but the milkshakes are something special: you can choose from cakey-biscuity ones, chocolate-bar-y ones, fruity-ones and even ones with things like Wham! bars in. Odd and brilliant. They’re not paying me, but I’d take bribes in Fry’s Peppermint Cream Shakes… mmmm. It’s got a sort of American diner vibe, loads of papers and magazines, free wifi and a table-top MAME machine with PacMan and Donkey Kong. What’s not to like? On the website you can see they’re continued the retro theme, with both a flash into AND a hit counter. Good skills.

Shop

Shop

If you’ve ever moaned about Birmingham’s lack of independent shops then for the next six weeks (at least) you’ve reason to visit the Bull Ring and support a really indie operation. Brum’s award-winning Created in Birmingham blog has got the keys to a unit just opposite the Apple store — and they’re selling only the best stuff that is made in Brum: art, prints, fanzines, T-shirts… The opening was last night, and the sales were looking brisk. Get yerself down: Location: Bull Ring, Level 3 Upper Mall West Opening hours: Mon-Sat 10am to 8pm. Sun 11am to 5pm There’s also a dedicated shop blog, should you have help, products, or owt else to offer.

Eccomony fails to bounce back for rubber shop

Cocoon fetish shop in Digbeth, you've seen it the one with the quite "constricted" mannequins in the window, is to shut. Huge savings to be made, if money is tight.

Bread and circuses? New blogs in Brum

Again with the new blogs, soon I may be able to give up this lark and retire. Here’s some that I’ve found – or been told of (thanks peeps). Indigo Whole Foods is a blog about starting a whole food shop (called… you’ve guessed) in Moseley. It doesn’t seem obsessed with VAT and pulses so far, but the shop is yet to open. Could be interesting… your conscience and Zuki – Proof are two blogs related to the wunderkammer artwork that was recently at BIAD. Derek Belm – actually factually has to be read. I’m pointed to another Indigo blog – what the heck – add any brum-related blogs you can to the comments here.

His Master’s Faggots and Pays

Along with the castle, zoo and the Robin Hood – there’ll soon be another reason to visit Dudley (should you need one). HMV are going to open a ‘concept’ store that replaces loads of the CD racks with ‘downloading kiosks’, Mac and iPod area and a juice bar. I’m all for modern ideas and hanging out in record shops (you may be one of the many people I’ve bored over the years with my bar-cum-venue-cum-record shop idea, last seen as an idea for putting in Drift in Moseley), but I’m not sure a chain will be the place to do that. Still interesting it will be.
