Roots maneuver

Despite my pitiful attempt at live-blogging (thwarted by my phone crashing once every minute or so) BiNs was there at Rootsville on Saturday, fully enjoying the displaced festival experience. The chance to kip in my own bed – however postponed – after getting all festivaled up is fully appreciated by an old git like me. The Inspirals didn’t disappoint, nor did the brilliantly random line-up. Wandering to the bar and seeing an-almost string quartet jazz version of of national anthem (no idea who!) with the Dholblasters standing just off stage in full regalia (I think waiting to go on with the Destroyers) was a sight that I won’t forget in a hurry. The wet weather obviously kept some people away, but everything tat could be organised seemed to have been done to a tee. Loved the ‘del-boy”s bars out ‘underneath the arches’, and the odd train going overhead is something that Misty’s should incorporate into all their sets. CiB is doing what it does so well and collating everything on t’interweb about it

Yay and (Betty) Boo

The good news is that Moseley Festival’s Music in the Park no longer clashes with Rootsville – it’s been moved to 11th and 12th August. The bad news is that Rootsville now clashes with Betty Boo at the Nightingale!

Doctor I keep thinking I’m a marquee and a teepee

This Saturday it’s Rootsville – don’t forget that it’s free until 6pm, and that should include; Steve Gibbons, Chrissy Van Dyke, Soweto Kinch and loads of other stuff. It’s still pretty cheap for after that and there’s The Destroyers, Misty’s and the Inspiral Carpets. And I reproduce here a stop press (how quaint) from their myspace page – so I dont’ have to transpose it all out of capitals. STOP PRESS – IN EVENT OF BAD WEATHER-(SURELY NOT AFTER 3 SOLID WEEKS OF BLOODY RAIN!! AND WITH OSIBISA BOKKED TO PERFORM THEIR SMASH HIT SUNSHINE DAY), ANYWAY IN THE EVENT OF RAIN, WE WILL BE PLACING MASSIVE MARQUEES OVER PERFORMANCE AREAS. THEY DON’T GET THAT AT GLASTONBURY. I’m certainly going, if only to see Osibisa ‘bokked’…

Zulus gonna getcha

The zulus are about to hit Brum, and for once none of them will have gold Birmingham City pendants round thier necks. The Young ZULU Warriors (all 26), have just confirmed as one of the special guests to appear on what is already an extraordinary line up, at the Rootsville Festival. Direct from Kwazulu Natal, we have been told to prepare for a barrage of drummers and dancers in full regalia surging it’s way down Gibb St – just like a normal Saturday night then ;) I dont’ think this bit of video can possibly do them justice, but it’s pretty much all I can find on t’interweb. Worth a look tho’ We also hear that the promoters are also trying to organise a performance piece which takes it’s cue from the film Network, you know “I’M AS MAD AS HELL AND I AM NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE“. Rootsville, Mad as Hell. Fantastic stuff.

Cool as folk, rock jazz, blues &c.

Cool as folk, rock jazz, blues &c.

The Inspiral Carpets are heading to Brum as part of the Rootsville Festival – always ones to jump at the chance to hob-nob with royalty from England’s second city, hem hem I spoke to lead singer Tom Hingley… The Inspiral Carpets’ Life LP was one of my first ‘grown up’ record purchases, I’m not counting the hormone-fueled obsession with Wendy James and Transvision Vamp or Ed Stewart’s Pop Party. Drawing me to them rather than the rest of the Madchester scene was, at first, the full Farsifa organ reminding me of The Stranglers (who I had a bizarre pre-teen obsession with), but it was more the ‘proper’ songs, the real-life lyrics that kept me actually listening. It was the songs again that meant I stayed huddled against an ice-cream van in the rain watching the re-formed Inspirals at Glastonbury three years ago, instead of slinking away to a tent, any tent. They stood out at Glastonbury that year as a band that actually had songs and could play them, despite the fashion to denigrate ‘band’ bands in favour of the more trendy ‘world’ stuff – a groove is all well and good, but it’s not going to keep you...
