Anyone got photos of 70s/80s Brum venues?

A plea from Jez: I’m making a film about Reggae, Punk and Bhangra in Birmingham around how communities and individuals express themselves through music. I received a small amount of funding for this with a condition I used 75% (roughly 45 mins) of archive material. The completed film will be shown as part of the re-opening of the Midlands Arts Centre from May- Sept which expected to attract 20,000+ visitors. It is a non-commercial film and is part of the Birmingham Popular Music Archive http://birminghammusicarchive.co.uk. I really need some visuals of the following venues from the 70′s/80′s: Fighting Cocks, Rebeccas, Cedar Club, Hare & Hounds, Santa Rosa/Rialto, Elite cinema Handsworth, Star Club, Red Lion Balsall Heath, International Small Heath, Odean New St,Locarno, Romulus, Jug of Ale,Mermaid I don’t have money to pay for use but would obviously give you a full credit/thanks. I’m on an incredibly tight deadline now (I was let down on getting some images of the above hence the urgent nature) so it would be hugely appreciated if you can help that you get jpgs to me before Wednesday of this week! Thanks in advance Jez Collins Birmingham Popular Music Archive

As part of the Frankfurt Market in the city centre, Bob Wilson has brought along his traditional wooden carousel.  Last year I tried to persuade several friends to have a turn on it with me, but for some reason, they were reluctant. Finally my good old mum agreed. It’s actually a bit of a bumpy ride, but we had fun waving at people as we whizzed by! It might help to have some Gluwein first ;)

Reaching out from beyond the grave…… Sorry, that’s a rubbish intro! But have you heard what has come to town?! It’s the controversial Bodies Revealed exhibition and it’s being held at the Custard Factory in Digbeth. From the website: Using real human specimens, painstakingly prepared and respectfully displayed The Bodies Revealed exhibition lets visitors of all ages explore deep within the human body in a way that informs but doesn’t overwhelm. It opens today and is running until January, maybe longer if the demand is there. I got a sneak preview of the exhibition at the press day on Wednesday, and it really is a unique way to view and learn more about the human body. I found it fascinating and a bit surreal. If you would like to see more photos, pop over to my blog. It’s was very interesting subject to photograph, if not a little unnerving when I found myself getting a little too close to one of the bodies…..! Have a fab Halloween weekend! See you next week :)

It’s four in the morning, the…

beginning of April I’m writing you know just to see if you’re better. The Wholesale Markets are cold, but I like the angles, there’s tannoy announcements on New Street all through the evening. Some photos from the Brum leg of the worldwide 4am Project. I was out, painting pictures with words rather than lenses — doing a bit of reportage for The Big Paws. You can hear the 4am Project bit here: Interviews from the 4am Project.

Brave Danny Smith battles on with Technical Difficulties

Brave Danny Smith battles on with Technical Difficulties

Exclusive Photos Despite being tragically struck down with a case of the sniffles, Brum’s newest radio phenomenon vowed to keep on with his own brand of talking between records. Danny, 30, dragged himself into Rhubarb‘s Custard Factory studios and struggled with his own head-cold and the soundcheck of a huge set of speakers on Saturday to deliver some witticisms and some music on his Technical Difficulties show. Danny has in the past been a controversial figure, his blogging on Created in Birmingham caused legal ructions, but his brave fight with a runny nose will surely win over the hearts and minds of people the World over. “I’d encourage everyone to get some lemsip in” said Brave Danny™.

Up the cut

Up the cut

Although the price is pushing it towards Christmas-present-for-dad-with-canal-obsession territory, there’s no doubting the beauty of the photos in the new book ‘The Cut’: “Peter Donnelly’s evocative photographs taken during the 1960′s, record the time and his verse the surroundings and its many wonders. The two albums have been created recently by his son Simon after finding some layouts his father did for two books he intended to publish. The first called “The Cut” includes pictures and verse about the Black country. Although Peter was born in Birmingham he moved to Cradley Heath after getting married. The area’s Pete Photographed during this time include Brierley Hill, Hawne Basin, Cradley Heath, Netherton, Round Oak Steel Works (Merry Hill)” Birmingham and Black Country Nostalgia, is the appropriately named site to go and investigate further. It’s a step up from the photocopies of old bus tickets nostalgia books we guiltily enjoy.
