Stirchley Community Market Song

Newton Chambers is "a part-time musician and full-time human." He has written "a rather nice little song all about the increasingly wonderful Stirchley Community Market." "Creatively, the important things to know are that: 1) all instruments featured on the track are from Stirchley and 2) the word “cauliflower” features heavily in the lyrics." It also features the word "nan", which is nice, and has a sort of New Vaudeville Band vibe… it's a charity single to raise funds for—I think—a gazebo. So buy before you try.

Handsworth Evolution

Robin Valk has produced a somewhat epic documentary a three-parter, dealing with the music of Handsworth and beyond, in the 70s and 80s. The documentary was commissioned by Birmingham Music Heritage, and Robin talked to members of Steel Pulse, UB40, The Beat, plus Apache Indian, Ruby Turner, Muff Winwood and Andy Hamilton, among others. Robin says: “It’s all there – the story of how the children of those early post-war immigrants came up with a vital new approach to reggae, mixed, matched and mashed up… and invented whole new styles of music along the way. And right now, there’s even a third generation doing new and vital stuff. Now, with the blessing of Birmingham Music Heritage, whose commission it was, I am making it available via Sound Cloud, after the jump. Know what? I love internet publishing.” The programme is in three parts – I built it so it would allow for a news bulletin and breaks for promos and/or ads. It’s also on offer to local community stations for rebroadcast, gratis – email me, using the link at the botton of this post, and I’ll send you a DropBox invite. In the meantime, tag away to your hearts’...

Birmingham Music Map — new home needed

Birmingham Music Map — new home needed

With the Birmingham Popular Music Archive I’ve been inviting the public to contribute to an online database of music culture in Birmingham, by placing venues, artists, people or anything they feel relates to music on a map. You can see and add your memories to the map, here. An editioning of the results so far were commissioned in the form of the Birmingham Music Map as part of ‘plug in’ an exhibition at mac curated by Simon Poulter. The exhibition has now finished, and the artwork (printed on toughened glass and around a metre wide by 1.4m high) is looking for a new home. I’m happy for it to be displayed in any public place as long as they will display an artist’s card next to it and look after it — it would be brilliant if it was mounted somewhere appropriate, but if you’re interested please drop me a line at jon@jonbounds.co.uk. If you’ve not got the room or worry about your walls’ durability for such a monster, poster/print copies are available, screenprinted on gorgeous white archival paper at B1 (707 × 1000mm /27.8 × 39.4in) in a signed and numbered limited edition of 100 copies. Go buy one (£25 plus £5 postage...
