Bear in front (of Millennium Point)

The safest way to avoid the cloying car-crash of Children in Need on BBC One might just be to get out to the local CiN event at Millennium Point. There you’re guaranteed not to witness newsreaders “getting into the spirit of it”, but instead see (this year at least) legendary bhangra artist Malkit Singh and ascending star Jaz Dhami head the star studded line up for the ‘Pudsey Does Bhangra’ appeal show. It’s on 6pm to 11pm on Friday 20th November  at Millennium Point, and — while you should no-doubt have your donation hat on — it’s free.

Help break a World Record this week

You may have heard me mention that I’ve been working on a project called The Big Picture, well it’s culminating in Brum this weekend with the unveiling of an artwork that should break the World Record for the largest photo mosaic ever. But, the world’s largest anything takes a lot of putting together, and for weeks now volunteers have been sticking photos together on the 288 panels that will make up the final piece. There are about 113,000 photos in all and still a lot of work to do. So, if you have any free time this week everyone working on the Big Picture would love to see you at Thinktank to help build this huge artwork. You can turn up at any time between 10am – 4pm each day until Thursday this week (if you’d like more details see the Big Picture site). Even if you can’t help out, you’d be very welcome at the unveiling on Saturday (23rd Aug) outside Millennium Point, the covers will come off at 2pm.

Oh go jump off a building

Oh go jump off a building

Fools (or as the press release puts it “adrenaline junkies, thrill seekers and sightseers”) will be able to jump off a huge tower VTP200 by Millenium point in three years time – if plans get the go-ahead. A the bottom there are planned resturants and a hotel, while 190m up (by comparisson the Rotunda is 81m tall) visitors can have a go on rides (“Flight Trainer, Giant Drop and Seesaw”) – and four extreme activities includinga bungee jump and a further 10m “Climb To The Top”. On a clear day they reckon you should be able to see 30 miles, which is almost to Telford, which is nice. Plans and a scale model of the building will be at Millennium Point from Saturday 15th – Saturday 22nd September, I can’t find a planning application on the council site, so is it all pie in the sky? (I’m sure you would be able to get pie btw). Brum’s London Eye or Eifiel Tower? A bit Vegas or too Blackpool? What do you think?
