The Russians aren’t coming

The Russians aren’t coming

“New maps revealed” says the Mail and although I think I’ve seen these before, Soviet era Russian maps of Brum are surely not new anyway. They are pretty interesting tho’, and apparently have “military targets” down at Fort Dunlop. You’ll have to search the website old-maps.co.uk for Birmingham to see them, ’1977 Russian Map” should be in the results.

Cozy Powell? That’s miles away

Cozy Powell? That’s miles away

Ages ago we asked you to contribute to a Google Map. A Brum music map, of not just musicians or venues or bands, but mangers, personalities, shops, companies, collectives and hang-outs. That map is still open for contributions, but you can now buy an A1 poster of memories: It contains over 200 records, placed on the map by contributors. Zoom in, or see a detail: It’s available to buy on my Zazzle store, with my other map-based artworks. And it’s Christmas soon. Thanks to the Birmingham Music Archive.

Brum Music Map

Brum Music Map

Please help us, and the Birmingham Music Archive build up a “music map” of Birmingham. We’re looking to map anything; bands, singers, musicians, promoters, managers, venues, record shops, music shops, hangouts, anything that has a “place” and that place in in Brum (or nearby). There are lots of reasons for doing it, mainly that it’s great to have a record of such stuff — we could use it as the basis of research, art, or displays or, well tons of stuff. But there’s something special I want to do with it (’tis a secret) , and I want to be able to do it before the end of the month. June is, as we’ve been going on about, Birmingham Music Month — and it would be great to have a load of this done come July. So, we’ve created a Google map, and started to add stuff to it — and we’d like you to help as much as you can. View Birmingham Music Map in a larger map How to add stuff to the map:

Artists commisioned for new MAC

When the MAC re-opens in Cannon Hill Park — next year — there are going to be a load of new piece of art, some inside and permanent, some outside, some transitory. You can see about some of them (with pics and video) on the macartists.co.uk site. One that especially caught my eye is described as: Amplifying The Map - Kate Chapman and Charlotte Goodwin are inviting people who live, work or play close to mac to re-discover familiar places and explore places they have never visited before, sharing their thoughts and observations to create an audio map of the changing landscape. There’s more info in the press release.

Interactive Travel Map

Based on Google Maps, Network West Midlands (who are in overall charge of buses trains and the metro) have done a great job on this map. Not only can you zoom right down into individual bus-stops – but you can see the timetable when you do, and even plan routes. Good work.

A to Zedding

Random trips around the A to Z, glorious psychogeography: “A-to-Zedding is much more than just a hobby. It’s an intellectual, spiritual and deeply personal pastime. The A-to-Zedder’s dream is to visit and gain a deep understanding of every ‘square’ in their chosen A-Z map.”
