Dogging up King’s Heath

Pointed out on Twitter over the weekend is that the opening titles of Childrens’ ITV ‘classic’ Woof! (plot: boy turns into dog at inopportune moments — Billy’s Boots with more fleas) are set in luscious King’s Heath. The dog wanders down the High Street and surprises a vicar who’s hanging around the toilets on the corner of Vicarage Road. Also the setting for this classic bit of filming.

Railing against the dying of the light

The Acock’s Green Focus group are conducting surveys about other areas of Brum, they’ve been to King’s Heath and Cotteridge — if my knowledge of the 11 route is as it should be, next stop Harborne?

King’s Heath 1960

Spotted by Craig FoTS, this cine-film is great. It was : “filmed by the son of the owner of W.H. Rhodes, Glass & China shop, at 160 High Street. The film was made available to the Kings Heath Local History Society in response to the Kings Heath Goes Digital archive appeal. The film includes scenes of King Edward Camp Hill School; the Red Lion Vicarage Road; old men meeting at the bench alongside All Saints church; shops on the High Street; greengrocers in Silver Street; flower seller in Institute Road in front of Woolworths; The Parade and Kingsway cinema; the Library; Police Station and finally the vicar and All Saints church. “ Cracking stuff, more please.

Who’s What, Where? When, Why and How?

I’m never sure about farmers’ markets. Not only to they present yet another apostrophe conundrum — organised as they mostly are by local business associations, i.e. groups of grocers — but there’s a tendency for the same farmers to traipse around the “circuit”, so each market becomes as personality-less as the chain stores they’re meant to be an anathema to. So while I like fruit vodka and garlic olives as much as the next bohemian, I’ve taken to reacting much like Earl (of TV’s My Name is…): Get the Flash Player to see this content. But, why am I bringing this up (except as a glorious chance to use the six honest serving-men as a post title)? Well, because someone has nicked King’s Heath’s “Who’s What?”. When, Why and How are not known.

In the Pavilion getting padded up

I spend a nice evening this week at the pub quiz at The Pavilion pub in Kings Heath. It was a good quiz, not too literary, not to celebrity or news obsessed, not to easy. The pub even has a website, which iI’ll direct you to in a second after this warning — like a MySpace profile of a goth band there’s a video which autoplays the minute it loads. Wait for it… go. For those of you not into visiting pub websites, the video still has a wonderful 70s cinema-ad-for-local-carpet-shop vibe, you know the type “…only two minutes from this cinema”. It’s embeded below. You’ll have to right-click and select “play” (the only way I could stop it playing was to set it to pause in the HTML): I’ll be back, we might even come better than last in the quiz next time (note to self, revise Fleetwood Mac).

Councillor 2.0 means having to say you’re sorry

Councillor 2.0 means having to say you’re sorry

Kings Heath and Moseley councillors Martin Mullaney and Ernie Hendricks went in front of the City Council Standards Committee on Friday – to answer charges of breaking the Local Councillors Code of Conduct when they snuck into the disused Moseley Tram Depot to make a video about the state of the building. They were found guilty of failing to treat the owner of the property with respect, but cleared of other stuff (full verdict in the Post. And isn’t it nice to see a photo with Ernie in, rather than just Martin). They’ve been asked to apologise and take the video down off YouTube (they have, but everyone should know that once something’s been on the internet…). According to Martin’s site he’s going to say sorry, but Ernie won’t: Both Councillors to be suspended for one month, unless they write a letter of apology to Mr Zaman and publish the apology on Councillor Mullaney’s website. The suspension will start 14days after the publication of the findings of the Committee next week – the suspension will not occur if the Councillors apologise. Both Cllr Hendricks and myself have agree the following: a) I will apologise to Mr Zaman. Cllr Hendricks...

A night with the Woods, in the Heath

From Friends of the Stars… In the late 1990s in California Dorian Wood decided to track down his worldwide namesakes using the interweb and eventually got in touch with Birmingham-based Dorian Wood. Finding someone who shares your slightly out-of-the-ordinary name on the other side of the globe would be one thing, but to find out that you are both involved in the creation of strange and beautiful music is something quite altogether different. On Good Friday 21st March 2008 (Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath)we are bringing together these unique two talents to play on the same bill for the very first time. More and sounds on the FotS blog. “free entry if your name is also Dorian Wood”

Booze Hounds

Booze Hounds

Steve Gerrard shows us the result of his photoshoot with Envy and Other Sins (Envy is the one with the hat I think) – nice band photos, but the real beauty is the interior of the Hare and Hounds (who’ve just sorted their site out, good news). And while we’re in photos of the H&H mode here’s one I found on Flickr (this must be what early 60s bands looked liked – I’m going to call them Rolling and Other Pins) : Don’t think they’ve changed the wallpaper since.

Wild in the aisles

I’m not advising you to watch ITV, but if you really want to see King’s Heath’s Somerfield (and don’t actually want to go there, which might be sensible) then you can flick on the goggletube at 8pm tomorrow (Tues 18th) to see posh boob-grabbers Trinny and Susannah ‘Undress the Nation’. The Nation in this case meaning the tills at the supermarket, and undressing in this case (I hope and pray) meaning putting more clothes on the check-out staff. Via
