Urban Memes — Your Brumicana Guide

A piece on the bits of Birmingham’s history that play on the mind: “It’s a coming of age. Our society doesn’t cast you into the forest naked to kill a wild boar anymore, it makes you live in either soulless or fetid accommodation and hunt from the Tesco Value range. Having gone through that, as an elder of the Brum tribe I can now reveal the secrets of our race-memory, an induction more powerful than anything involving smoking those funny leaves. All cities have what we call urban myths, in fact most cities have the same ones: the niteclub guy stabbing people with HIV-invected needles who left notes in the ’90s, amphibians in the sewers and that “regeneration” is best served by the blandest of culture. But myths aren’t true, what I’m going to impart are more urban memes, they dance round the edge of Legend but are all true. ish.” read the rest in the latest issue of Fused (online here).

Cozy Powell? That’s miles away

Cozy Powell? That’s miles away

Ages ago we asked you to contribute to a Google Map. A Brum music map, of not just musicians or venues or bands, but mangers, personalities, shops, companies, collectives and hang-outs. That map is still open for contributions, but you can now buy an A1 poster of memories: It contains over 200 records, placed on the map by contributors. Zoom in, or see a detail: It’s available to buy on my Zazzle store, with my other map-based artworks. And it’s Christmas soon. Thanks to the Birmingham Music Archive.

The history of BiNS

Sort of. At WxWM2 (a gathering of Brum interweb interested types) I did a brief talk about how I came to start BiNS — it was improvised and I wandered wildly off topic. Thanks to the wonderful guys at Rhubarb Radio (where I also do the Saturday breakfast show, plug plug) it’s now available as audio. Listen to download it if you like. There are also all of the other talks too, not fair of me to pick one out — you will probably enjoy them all.

The Big Paws – Rhubarb Radio 7/3

Myself and Jules had a lot of fun on the interweb radio on Saturday morning. You can listen again to two hours of music and stuff, including: a rude joke about Scroobius Pip, sweary news, and the brass section: All stuff about the show is at thebigpaws.co.uk – including the tracklisting and all the things we talked about. Tune in again next week on Rhubarb Radio.com Saturday’s 8am – 10am or listen again.

Why The Big Paws?

Why The Big Paws?

Rhubarb Radio has kindly consented to allow your very own BiNS-ers Jon & Jules to have a show — on the internet radio and everything. It’ll be what you’d expect from us — intelligent, amusing, cool, and featuring ELO (maybe). We’d love you to listen to us live (at Rhubarb Radio.com — click on the ‘Listen Live’ button) so you can abuse us via Twitter or email — the show is on Saturday mornings between 8am and 10am. But if you’re not awake, or by a computer there’s ways of listening again on the website. The show’s got its own blog – thebigpaws.co.uk where we’ll post track listings and links to any stuff we mention that has links. Follow The Big Paws on Twitter for the easiest way to talk to us during the show. We will also be live-tweeting our track list. (What is Twitter? Here’s a handy guide to get you started.) There’s a facebook group, if that’s the sort of thing you like. Our studio dogsbody will be collecting any messages or requests (we’ll only play good stuff tho’). So tune in at 8am Saturday, you know it makes sense.
