Setting up a Blues Supporters’ Trust – A Way For Fans To Effect Change

Call for interest for people to help set up a Supporters' Trust for the Blues over on Often Partisan. These are: "an organisation built by fans on democratic principles to give themselves a legitimate voice in the running of their club. Birmingham City have in the last twelve months been active in helping the supporters clubs grow and become an active part of the club itself, but an umbrella organisation is needed so that when times are hard, there is a focal point for people to rally behind. It also can do things like buy shares in a football club – which then give fans a real say in how it is run; get fans appointed to board room level to ensure that the club doesn’t lose touch with it’s fanbase, and most importantly give a united voice which can influence media reporting on the fans."

Paul Tait Talks to Joys and Sorrows

Blues legend on playing for the club you support and staying true to your area and friends: "I always went drinking in rougher pubs. I couldn’t be one of those footballers who drunk champagne and drove in a posh car. I drove a battered up Rover and drunk in rough pubs. It’s who I am."

The Saturday Men (West Bromwich Albion 1962)

“The Saturday Men” spends a week following West Bromwich Albion around. It follows them to training, the inner workings of the boardroom (to the extent to which the inhabitants of said room were going to be honest when there were cameras around), takes the time to meet a former player who is about to embark on a new career as a salesman and even stops in on a pre-match team talk by the club’s then manager, Archie McAuley.

Danny Smith: Blues and me

Danny Smith: Blues and me

I was watching and saying manly things when Birmingham City almost beat Man Utd on Saturday, but first, a story; When I was younger I was deemed shy and somewhat bookish, if you would have asked me at the time I probably would have more described myself as “mysterious” or “a lone wolf” proving not only was I a bit socially awkward, but also a bit of a tool. The cure for this, my matriarchal Nan decided, was to get a job in a pub as soon as I was old enough. The pub was, and by all accounts still is, quite rough. When I arrived for my first shift the manager, a lurching ex-police officer, took me to one side and explained that the pub was mainly a Zulu* pub and if there was any trouble I should just go get him, referring to a group of blokes in the corner he said: ‘See the big one?’ ‘Can’t miss him’ I said ‘He’s one of the Lieutenants give him whatever he wants and I’ll square it with him later’ ‘OK’ I said ‘See him’ pointing a particularly violent looking one with a fist full sovereign rings ‘he’s a...

Chaos At Halesowen Town

"When Morell Maison arrived at Southern League club Halesowen Town in 2007, he had high hopes for the club. Few, however, would have guessed that rather than being merely the manager of the club he was actually the owner, and fewer still would have even hazarded a guess at the absolute chaos that has engulfed the Midlands club over the last six months or so, a story which is now involving administration, a boycott of the club by supporters and even the involvement of the specialist fraud officers of the West Midlands Police’s Economic Crime Unit."

Old football was rubbish

Old football was rubbish

So sang Frank Skinner on Fantasy Football, but with “big money men” coming in to buy Blues and promising £5m (about enough to buy Julian Lescott’s haircut) to save the team it’s feeling more and more like Ken Wheldon is about to come back albeit dragging Steve Mcmanamanaman with him. Good time for the Mirror to open up search of their football archive, not that much stuff there at the moment – but a quick treat for Blues, Villa, or even Albion fans.

Class War in Perry Hall

Some residents near Perry Hall Park are very unhappy about the number of cricket squares that are covering the park – preventing people using those bits for anything else. From my youth I remember it being covered by football pitches (and not much in the way of facilities for using them), and having that odd ornamental garden thing — but a glance at the Google Map shows how that's changed.

It’s Chico Time

It’s Chico Time

Chico Hamilton that is. Intelligent football magazine When Saturday Comes prints in each issue a photo or selection of photos about football past. This month it was the turn of old villa club photographer Terry Wier. One of his shots is this, of a proud Chico outside his obligatory boutique (excuse the line, this one is scanned from across the fold). Where was this fabulous shop? Something tells me it’s in a High Street somewhere rather than being slap in the centre of town — but do you know where? A load of Terry’s photos were collected into a book, called The Weir and the Wonderful (it’s still available, but not cheap).
