Brum folkers Gurdan Thomas have new EP out this week, produced we’re told by legendary Birmingham producer Bob Lamb (The Lilac Time, UB40). It’s out on a “pay what you like” deal on bandcamp: "Todd" – Gurdan Thomas by Commercially Inviable Records And a limited (100) edition CD release. Also for sale on iTunes, eMusic, and 7Digital.

Ian Edwards found this wonderful looking book in a 2nd hand shop: It contains the words of about a hundred songs — complied in 1915, and dedicated to Mrs Neville Chamberlain — from round these parts. Odd to read of Oldbury, Erdington and Smethwick as having Ladies and Lords, odder for them to have ballads and heroic deeds. Ian also found that the entire book is available online to read. There are no tunes, but stick you finger in your ear and strum a few minor chords and wine them in _that folk voice_ and you’ll be set. Would love to hear or see some versions of these — try ipadio and you can sing them down the phone and send us the link.

Get folked at the Town Hall

Birmingham Town Hall – where concerts start at the advertised time – is celebrating traditional English music around St George’s Day this year. Billy Bragg is among those playing in a series of concerts called the English Originals Weekend Festival, from 25th April. Smashing – and while we’re on a folk-at-the-Town-Hall bent Fairport Convention are there on Feb 29th.
