Digbeth is ‘A nice place for a Coach Station’ according to BRMB banter

Have you seen the new BRMB poster campaign? They're focusing on being local—understandable considering the way Galaxy is now a psuedo-national station. The posters are to demonstrate the standard of 'banter' you might hear if you tune in.Main problem is their lack of, erm, being funny. That's 'banter' for you: banter is wit without humor.Nicky at Digbeth is Good certainly doesn't find them amusing:

Eastside, East of Westside

Eastside, East of Westside

Here’s a tweet I saw the other day, a sentiment we’ve all heard (and maybe said) before: “Wish Birmingham’s creatives would shout louder about the great stuff that goes on in the city”. There are lots of good things, but by definition there’s chaff with the wheat too — so are we really after “the creatives” to do the shouting? Wouldn’t we be better served with a batch of critical eyes, exposing the greatness? Or is the shouting the first stage of that, do people need to be aware of ‘something’ before they can pick the best bits? But do “the creatives” (a pointless generalisation, but I may as well stick with it as everyone else seems to) really want to let us know they’ve got a trumpet? Or, do they just want to impress the art scene, get a few quizzical looks from passers-by and be able to moan that “people from round here don’t care”? There’s always been that suspicion floating round my head; notice how all the excitement is round the ‘private view’ or the party (something I’ve never really understood) rather than the exhibition itself, think about how odd (and ad-hoc) opening times prohibit dropping...

Digbeth Consultation Questionnaire

Digbeth is Good put an offline consultation online: "Atkins are conducting a Digbeth Consultation Questionnaire for Birmingham City Council and Advantage West Midlands, which they would like as many people as possible to respond to. Unfortunately it is not available online, so I’ve created a Google Form so you can complete it online if you like. I’ll forward the summary spreadsheet to Atkins, who are aware of what I’m doing (I spoke to representatives at the Digbeth Corridor Study Stakeholder Consultation Meeting). "

It’s all happening at Digbeth Coach Station. This photograph, taken in March 08, shows the old station, part demolished and all boarded up. But, no longer! It’s going to look something like this:   The brand spanking new station will be opening on 14th December, boasting a Starbucks, WH Smith and an Uppercrust bakery! I wonder if it will have wifi for the laptop traveller? There is also a some new public artwork on display which is made up of a massive red steel ring around the station with a sign welcoming people to Birmingham reading “A Hundred Thousand Welcomes” which is translated from an Irish setting in keeping with Digbeth being the Irish Quarter of Birmingham.  Have a great weekend :)

Mr Ralph — Brummie of the Year?

Mr Ralph — Brummie of the Year?

With voting now open for Brummie of the Year, we’re going to take a look at all the candidates. First, the last of the pub-to-pub peddllers — Digbeth’s Mr Ralph. Let’s let Nicky Getgood explain: “Mr Ralph is something of a Digbeth institution, invariably found in one of the many Digbeth pubs, peddling customised goods from his battered old suitcases.  Rumour has it he holds the last existing Birmingham pedlars license.  I found Mr Ralph quite fascinating so I wrote a blog post about him after he kindly agreed to it, including photos of him and his Mr Ralph branded goods.”
