Shop

Shop

If you’ve ever moaned about Birmingham’s lack of independent shops then for the next six weeks (at least) you’ve reason to visit the Bull Ring and support a really indie operation. Brum’s award-winning Created in Birmingham blog has got the keys to a unit just opposite the Apple store — and they’re selling only the best stuff that is made in Brum: art, prints, fanzines, T-shirts… The opening was last night, and the sales were looking brisk. Get yerself down: Location: Bull Ring, Level 3 Upper Mall West Opening hours: Mon-Sat 10am to 8pm. Sun 11am to 5pm There’s also a dedicated shop blog, should you have help, products, or owt else to offer.

Created in Birmingham – Cluedo

Add this to the list of things I didn’t know about Birmingham. The awesome game Cluedo was created right here in Birmingham and it celebrates it’s 60th Birthday this year. Read the Birmingham Post’s coverage. ==Update== Following some discussion on the twitter it’s generally felt that Mr Pratt, who invented Cluedo, deserves recognition by the local Civic Society and the Broad Street Walk of Fame. Following my attempts to get John Wyndham on the Walk of Fame I’d like to offer my support to getting the inventor of Cluedo on the walk of fame. I’d like to see Anthony Pratt get a star on the Birmingham Walk of Stars on Broad Street (he’s created something that’s in the homes of millions of people, he’s given us hours of pleasure, so lets give something back). So far the walk of fame has celebrated four football related stars (either for teams or individuals), three musicians, two comedians and a radio soap opera, a sports commentator, a radio actor and Julie Walters. All deserving in their ways but I’d like your help to get a well deserving creative genius onto the walk of stars. Here’s what you need to do: 1) Go to the Walk...

Surface Unsigned festival try “legal action” against Created in Birmingham

Created in Birmingham, where you’re most likely to find links to arty stuff rather than a row, posted about the Surface Unsigned ‘festival’ (an interminably drawn-out battle of the bands competition). After originally being fairly positive (and liking a couple of the bands) Danny Smith dug a little deeper and was unsettled by the rules of the competition — specifically that if bands didn’t sell enough tickets then they couldn’t progress to the next round. Surface seem to have not enjoyed this bit of publicity, as Danny revealed on Friday last that they sent a faux-legal “take down request” to him (Pete Ashton has the text of the email here). Where as they could have cited Britain’s sue-friendly libel laws (they’d have been wrong in my opinion) and made it squeaky-bum time, they decided to talk about copyright (Danny quoted from the horse’s mouth, their rule-book). That’s where they’re quite wrong as far as I can see, as for the purposes of reporting quoting is considered fair-use. Since they like rules so much, they’d better learn those of blogging and the law hadn’t they? I don’t have any respect for they way they’ve handled it at all.

Brum web feed starter kit

Jules is filling in for Pete Ashton over at Created in Birmingham while he is off being very drunk at the Guardian Media Awards and then SXSWi (how drunk he’ll be there is not established). She doesn’t quite follow the Brumterweb with the same slavish devotion  as me so I ‘put together’ (ahem, really just exported from Google Reader) an OMPL file of all the Brum blogs and search feeds I subscribe to. It’s a mess, as some no longer work and some of the searches also pull through what it is in some of the feeds, but it seemed odd to make it and not offer it up for anyone who wants. So tis here. Btw if there’s anything missing, please drop me a line.
