Where the streets have culturally, historically or geographically relevant names

The council has a competition going to come up with a street name (which, is either: culturally, historically or geographically relevant to the area in which you live). The pretty shonky example they give is: "Poets Corner in Small Heath, Birmingham is named so because the streets around it are all named after famous poets; Tennyson Road being one." – so a road is named after some other roads, great. "All suitable street names will be made available to developers who require a new street name. If your proposed street name is chosen by a developer, you will be contacted and invited to the unveiling of your street name plate being placed on the new street." So, what have you got? Does Small Heath need a Bluenose Road, or Edgbaston a LolDierdre Avenue? Have a go for all to see here, but don't forget to enter the serious ones first:

Bull vs Elephant

Bull vs Elephant

There’s a painfully slow flash site announcing a Kerrang radio unsigned bands competition — with the chance to play at the Bull Ring. Festibull is going on at the Bull Ring on the 18th and 19th of October — where eight bands battle the public vote to win the chance to support ‘Cage The Elephant’ (whoever they are). To get the chance to be one of those bands you have to upload an mp3 to the website (plus photos and videos if you have them) and then get your mates to vote.

You can’t win a raffle without buying a ticket

Fancy a whole page of a newspaper to do what you like with? Some KLF-style “Abandon All Art Now” proclamation, or just a real big F— off to someone you hate? Can’t afford the £15,00 that would cost in The Guardian? How does a quid sound? The Eccentric City’s “international” prize draw offers just that. It’ll be drawn on Tuesday 23rd September 2008, at sometime after 7.30pm at the Anchor Pub in Digbeth. There’ll also be an Eccentric Auction and ale: “For those that made the Eccentric Auction last December will be familiar with the format. A cross between Ebay and a CarBoot, we sell items ranging from 3p to a little bit more it all depends on the crowd and what we have in our eccentric goodie bag! If you feel generous and eccentric enough to bring an item for the auction and to help us raise much needed funds for our free emotional newspaper, then please bring them along on the night! Thanks to Gerry at the Anchor Pub once more. He is also honouring us with another Eccentric Ale – The Butler and Lord Mayor Eccentric City beer.”

Took a great photo of Brum? Want to see it on a billboard?

Took a great photo of Brum? Want to see it on a billboard?

As part of The Big Picture (disclaimer – I’m working on this) there’s a competition the prize of which is to have your photo blown up and displayed on a 48 sheet billboard (that’s the really big landscape ones). Any photo added to the project on Big Picture Day (8th May, tomorrow as I write) stands a chance – and there’s a billboard for each area in the project, including Brum. There’s also an event in Victoria Square with a load of celeb lookalikes.

Emotional parkour

Via Brummie of The Year nominee Pete Ashton comes news of this K-Swiss (you know like adidas pumps but more stripes) sponsored freerunning competition. It involves you doing a bit of parkour in designated spots in Brum (by the Bank of Scotland is a favourite it seems), not killing yourself or any of the mini goths that hang around there, and uploading the videos. The prize is a trip to Lisses, Paris which is the ‘home of freerunning’, but a bit like winning a trip to Coventry (which I imagine is brill for this urban jumpy stuff), so I guess you’d really need to be into this to enter. The site has a nice map of good places to jump off, over and through around the city centre, and some video of peoples doing their things.

… intended as offensive or disparaging, just a bit of headline fun. In chickened out. 2006-09-06_035 : Originally uploaded by mo’ moseley. News reaches us via the Moseley Free email group that Moseley in Bloom (that’s flowers and that) has got to the national stage of the competition: Moseley In Bloom won Silver Gilt and was the Category Winner in the Urban Communities Category 2007. There were 9 entries in our category and two silver gilts were awarded (no golds). Out of the 55 entries in 11 categories Heart of England is allowed to put forward just four to represent the Region in 2008 and Moseley was one of those chosen. The others are Upton (Village), Bridgnorth (Town) and Solihull (City). I think this means not that this entry will be judged on a national basis, but it’s kind of a promotion to the top division of urban community floral displays. Gawd this horticulture is compilcated, if you fancy seeing the rules and this-years-finallists-from-last-year if you see what I mean then there’s some info on the RHS website.
