FlixFixer — a new type of cinema at the Custard Factory

FlixFixer is Social Cinema at the Custard Factory Theatre. “It allows you to choose movies you love, find a venue to screen them and invite friends, family or other like-minded film-lovers to share in a screening where you set the rules – be it dress-up, dress down, no hats or no food. It allows you to build a community of friends around your shared love of movies and get together regularly to celebrate that. We screen here on Wednesdays… or you can screen here whenever you want” Loads of special nights already booking, including an offering from the Dirty Bristow team.

ODEON and on and on

ODEON and on and on

Who knew that Kindstanding ODEON (now a Mecca bingo) was not only the one of the first ODEON (altogether now, Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation) but revered around the world as a piece of art deco splendour? Tom Lennon, that’s who, who told me all about a virutalisation project to show how it looked back in the day. King’s College London are doing the 3D work, which covers the inside as well as this outside view. Art Deco Britain has a ton of information about the cinema and its history, and some very nice pics:

Flatpack Three

Flatpack Three

Early, I know, but the news that 7inch cinema have announced the dates of the third Flatpack Film Festival — 11th to the 15th March 2009 — is too exciting to keep in. “Over five days in March you can discover some of the best stuff out there by taking a journey through cinemas, warehouses, railway arches and bars across Birmingham. This is a place where film runs headlong into live music and performance, where murals move, where the magic of early cinema mingles with boundary-defying new work from across the world. Contents may include: shorts; animation; artists film and video; live scores; music documentary; independent movies; kids films; installations; discussions; parties; flipbooks; cake. “ Make space in your diary now.

Eyes up

Eyes up

The Clifton Bingo hall in Great Barr is to call time, along with “house”, “clickey-click” and other bizarre bits of slang, this coming Monday (23rd June), closing Gala the owners say, due to “the smoking ban, increased taxation and new laws banning big jackpot machines.” (via the Mail). I like bingo as a concept far more than as a game, but it’s doubly sad as it throws into question the future of a lovely piece of art-deco architecture (seen above in the BiNS calendar 2006). Built in 1938, as a cinema, it’s Grade II Listed which means it’s safe from the bulldozers at the moment at least, but the commercial uses in this day and age for a building of its size and structure are few. This particular area of North Birmingham has a fair amount of shops and pubs, but there isn’t a lot of entertainment around (as I remember from my youth) — what would be lovely would be if the council could buy it and open it up as a community space of some kind. Theatre space, art space, community hall for meetings, how great that would be.
