Capsule – Brummie of the Year?

Capsule – Brummie of the Year?

With voting now open for Brummie of the Year, we’re going to take a look at all the candidates. This time multi-headed metal machine, Lisa and Jenny from Capsule: (not a great photo, but the only one I can find of them together…) Everyone knows what Capsule do, don’t they? Let’s get Pete Ashton to explain: “in 1999 Jenny Moore and Lisa Meyer decided they were fed up with travelling to see bands they liked so they started putting on gigs in Brum. In 2003 they put on a big gig and called it Supersonic. Now ten years on they’re put on hundreds of gigs and the Supersonic Festival is a world-renowned event. They don’t operate in a vaccum though, often working with arts and culture people across the region and have started the Home of Metal project to cement Birmingham’s reputation as the birthplace of heavy metal.”

Denim and Leather

It had completely escaped my notice that Capsule’s Home of Metal had its own website. It does. Whether you’re strangely attracted to Rob Halford’s bald head which gleams making him look a little like a roll-on deodorant, or it’s the poorly designed Aston Villa merchandise that adorned Napalm Death that really does it for you, then your memorabilia and memories could contribute to a fascinating digital archive of the music scene that the Midlands gave birth to. First up, you’re all invited to Wolverhampton: Saturday 25th October : Wolverhampton Art Gallery 10am – 4.30pm Lichfield Street Wolverhampton, WV1 01902 552 055 Home of Metal is a brand new project aimed at creating the first digital archive of metal music, memorabilia and fans stories, to tell the story of this unique moment of Midlands’ musical heritage. Launching at Wolverhampton Art Gallery on Saturday 25 October, 10am – 4.30pm, the project coincides with the 40th anniversary of when the term ‘heavy metal’ was coined by music journalist Lester Bangs when describing Black Sabbath. The launch event at the city centre Art Gallery encourages fans of Judas Priest, Napalm Death, Godflesh, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin to come along and share their...

Supersonic, Boom Time

Supersonic, Boom Time

I only managed to get to the Saturday of Supersonic this year, although given that my head still feels battered on Monday morning that may have been a blessing for my sanity. Supersonic, of course, is the mad as hell festival of avant garde noise-making that blesses Brum with its presence on a yearly basis. Manchester has built up an industry around a Sex Pistols gig that supposedly kick-started their entire culture — but that was just one gig, with about ten people there. Capsule bring the most inspiring bands to Brum all the time, without you having to stand next to Mick Hucknall to see them. If there’s any evolution in music then the coming years should see Birmingham becoming the world centre for beguiling noise, and we’ll have Lisa and Jenny to thank. That said there weren’t too many impressionable youngsters there (if the glut of facial hair was anything to go on), we should be sweeping up the emos and nu-ravers and depositing them in front of the stage. I’m not going to review the bands, others will do that with more in-depth knowledge and without the spurious asides (feel free to post links in the...

Igbeth Aturday – The Social Graphs

Igbeth Aturday – The Social Graphs

Here’s what we saw and did at Gigbeth on Saturday. Here’s just a review of the gigs, we’ll collect a more overall review for tomorrow probably. Starting to struggle after two solid days, and wanting to see some of the late stuff, we skipped a planned visit to the world of Mr Derry (4pm, what bands play at 4pm?)- and headed straight to catch Shady Bard at the Sanctuary at 8pm. We got there, paid £3.60(!) for a can of Red Stripe, to find Misty’s Big Adventure on stage – who weren’t meant to be on until 8.50. They weren’t really their exuberant selves, possibly knackered with all the work around the new album, but had drawn by far the biggest crowd we’d yet seen. They revealed hitherto unnoticed (at least to me) shades of Belle and Sebastian, and “The Wising Up song” is sounding extremely like “I Have Confidence in Confidence” from The Sound of Music. Grandmaster Gareth would make a fine Maria next time you are making a reality TV show. They are summed up thus: With the gig finishing early we decided to catch a touch of Aimee Strange who were in the Dragon Bar, they...

Very Metal

For too long Birmingham and the Black Country have failed to celebrate what is rightfully theirs, to claim the city and the region as home of “Heavy Metal”. And to celebrate it is the aim of METAL – A symposium to celebrate and explore the West Midlands musical heritage. The symposium is being held as part of the Supersonic Festival organised by Capsule, and features:Jim Simpson – Black Sabbaths manager for their first 3 albumsEdwin Pouncey aka Savage Pencil – renowned music journalist and cartoonistMark Titchner – Turner Prize nominee 2006Nicholas Bullen – Originator of Napalm Death/Scorn – inventor of ‘Grindcore’ Sounds smart – if you’re metal enough and can get to New Art Gallery, Walsall for a 5pm start on 13th July, then you should. www.capsule.org.uk/supersonic
