New independent designer-makers arts market for Birmingham City Centre

Handmade_Applicationssmall

After successfully running markets for local artists, illustrators, photographers, designer-makers, crafters and the like — in the not-exactly-conducive-to-passing-trade environs of the Custard Factory — Handmade have been working with Marketing Birmingham and Retail Birmingham towards launching a new weekly Handmade Arts & Craft Market for the City Centre. The new Handmade Market will be at the Bull Ring Markets, along Edgbaston Street, from St Martin’s down to Debenhams, every Saturday and Sunday. First markets on the 28th and 29th August — local crafty types are encouraged to sign up for a stall now.

CSI Lift

CSI Lift

Doing this to the Bull Ring lifts is all a lovely PR stunt for the CSI thing in the old Borders shop — until some old dear expires, knackered after taking the steps because the lifts are out of order.

Walk the dinosaur

Walk the dinosaur

I just wanted to share a little bit of image dyslexia I suffered from with the old Bull Ring. When I saw the sign on the over-road bit, I didn’t think ‘bull’. I eventually realised, but like when I originally read “ROFL” as “ROLF” it’s not really possible to change it in my mind. Now the sign has gone of course, I can’t readjust my head.

Red can to a bull

Red can to a bull

Red Bull, originally uploaded by Dachande663. This sculpture of Brasso made out of drinks cans appeared in town today — cementing the bull as a Birmingham landmark (others in the series are Big Ben and the Angel of the North). They’re supposed to mark ‘recycle week’, but I think the hand of Coca-Cola sponsorship may be in there somewhere.

Brum made the whistles on the Titanic you know

Have you seen that advert for Smirnoff? The one were all the debris is sucked from the sea to deomonstrate purity (purity for vodka being a big selling point) culminating with a huge ship leaning against a petrol garage? Well that was the first though that went through my mind when I heard that the Bull Ring was to have a cruise ship built in St Martins Square as it’s summer attraction this year. The nautical theme no doubt following on from last years “award winning” beach, the ship will be able to hold 200 people. More details will, perhaps at some point, be available on the Bull Ring website.
