fame vs power

Jasper Carrott has been announced as the second person to join the Broad St Walk of Stars (icBirmingham) which we can only surmise makes him the second most famous Brummie (out of those willing to turn up the the paving ceremony) – he’s not in the Birmingham Post’s 50 most powerful people in Birmingham tho’. The top 50 list is very much a behind the scenes power-broking list – and you’d be forgiven for not knowing who some of them were. Some are quite random (does Ed Doolan really wield that much actual power?), some are friends of BiNs (Hi Mr Stirrer, Adrian Goldberg), but the problem with power (if this has any real connection to reality) is that it comes with great responsibility – lets hope they all know how to handle it. I’ve never liked the idea of an elected mayor – if we had one they’d surely leap to the top of the list – but with so few of the ‘powerful’ having an electorate to answer to, I’m coming round to the idea. Fascinating fact, did you know that the singer of the Guillemots was a brummie?

Walk Pigs*

Despite being welcomed by Lord Mayor Randall Brew**, Ozzy Osbourne won’t be getting a drink when he opens the Birmingham Walk of Stars on July 6th, as apparently the “area is an Alcohol Restricted Zone and the consumption of alcohol will not be permitted in Centenary Square.” Should still be fun – and with the ceremony kicking off at 4pm, you should have plenty of time to get a pint somewhere on Broad St afterwards. *Doesn’t really work, sorry. **He should definitely form a charity cricket team called the Brew XI, shouldn’t he?

far away stars

Oddness abounds at the Broad St walk of fame thingy, where people are voting for Cliff Richard on the grounds that: He has played the NIA many times in his career and made it home to the massively successful Pro-Celebrity Tennis tournaments throughout the 90’s Just an opinion, but can’t we wait till we’ve run out of Brummies before we start ‘honouring’ any old leather-necked celebrities, just because they’re guaranteed to turn up at the proverbial opening of an envelope? Vote for Tony Butler.

Ozzy to comes home to Broad St

Ozzy to comes home to Broad St

We’ve always liked Gary Taylor’s idea for a ‘Brummie Walk of Fame, with Hollywood(the American one)-style pavement stars, although I’m not sure Broad St is the best place for anything. I’ll have to make a special trip tho’ on July 6th when Ozzy comes to the grand unveiling ceremony for his star. Ozzy to receive hometown honour – Yahoo! News UK – thanks to Kate Lyons for the tip off.
