Find and comment on Birmingham City Council Press Releases

Some good work has been done to make the council's press releases available as an RSS feed, but there's no way to comment on them on the official site (maybe on the new one?). To that end I've fed the feed into a WordPress blog where commenting is available.

Vote for a Brum Blog in the 2008 Weblog Awards

You can chose between Created in Birmingham or the personal bloggage of the lovely Mr Pete Ashton. CiB has a good chance of stopping someone from the evil Daily Mail — but I voted for Pete, i <3 Pete (second place in 2008's Brummie of the Year).

Gigbeth blog rumblings

Over on the Gigbeth blog they've took a rather harsh line on what I considered to be a quick witisism by Midge Diabolik. He made a quick quip about D:Ream – they got a bit defensive. When you're programming a deliberately diverse music event it's obvious that not everybody will like everything that's on – and catty remarks about bands you find distasteful is probably the mainstay of the British music press. So I'm surprised that they're suprised really. I'm really looking forward to the Young Knives, but find Guillemots boring. I'm excited by the Sugarhill Gang, but non-plussed by the revival of D:Ream. That's how it goes. Btw Gigbeth dudes and dudettes, there's something wrong with your WordPress installation — probably to do with where the site thinks the blog is installed (hence links and pages are up the spout) drop us a line if you'd like a bit of help.

Building sites

Building sites

Whether it’s the dark and stormy nights meaning we all stay in blogging and coding, or Brum being particularly interesting at the moment, or (as I suspect) the drunken fun of blogging meet-ups forging new connections, there are an absolute ton of new Birmingham-related blogs and sites springing up. The collective noun for a group of Birmingham websites? I’m plumping for “a brewery”. Blogging Brum is a group blog set up by Mark Steadman – the idea is that bloggers that blog in, but not about Birmingham have a space to talk about the city. It seems to be taking off, and is also a useful hub for blogging meet-ups. I almost wish I didn’t have a load of Brum blogs to write for already so I could join in. Birmingham Bloggers is an aggregator pulled together by Paul Bradshaw, posts from all the Brum-blogs he can find pop up in the timeline. The site also has a brum twitter aggregator. In a similar vien is Brumspace – from Pete Lewis et al-  which has blog aggregating and a chatspace. There’s also Planet Brum. WTFisBrum? is Pete Ashton’s brumular take on WFTistwitter? Upload talking-head videos answering the basic question...

Birmingham Bloggers meeting 2 – This post is a gestalt entity – copied and pasted from various sources

The second Birmingham Bloggers Meetup is on Monday, February 18 at the Dragon Inn on Hurst St (used to be an O’Neills). The meet starts at 7.00 and should last for a couple of hours at least. There’s no agenda, structure, hierarchy or (unless the new owners have a different approach to barkeepery) decent lager. Ta to CiB, Christopher Woods, Podnosh etc for saving me the typing. Name: Brum bloggers Meetup 2 Host: Birmingham Bloggers UK Type: Meetings – Club/Group Meeting Date: Monday, February 18, 2008 Time: 7:00pm – 9:00pm Location: The Dragon Inn Address: Hurst Street B5 4TD Birmingham Map: View

You won’t get me I’m part of the union

You won’t get me I’m part of the union

This evening I attended the first Birmingham Bloggers’ meet (at the Kitchen Garden Cafe in Kings Heath)  – it was organised around this Facebook group. Despite the cameras and laptop in the picture we didn’t talk too much about technology, or show off our gadgets (although I will admit to posting the photo via my iPhone while I was there). It was a nice fluid evening, with people dropping in and out,  having opinions and all of us desparatley trying not to have an agenda of any kind. I did however find out that Neve Campbell is always drinking in Kings Heath and that Debbie Harry is up for a balti. Stef (on the left with the nice cannon camera) recorded part of the conversation and promises to podcast it should anyone be even vaguely interested. There will no doubt be another, pop over to Facebook, or drop me a line an I’ll give you a nudge.

Start blogging, fabulous prizes to be won

Andrew Dubber started a blog about whisky not so long ago, he then merged it into his personal blog, but he’s started to get offers of free stuff. Makes you think, or at least it makes me think. I turned down the offer of some advertising on BiNS this week, as it was the type that could make the site look as it it was recommending all sorts of weird stuff (loans probably) , neutrality comes at a price however. So thinking of ways to help pay for the site (google ads don’t pay much at all), I thought I’d throw it out to you lot. We’ll be doing the regular calendar this year, and I’ve found a UK supplier so that might get a few more sales – but would (for example) people be prepared to buy a BiNS book? Or is there anyone out there who’s got a product that we could heartily endorse, so we wouldn’t feel bad about advertising it? Or I might just start a blog about primark socks, or some other daily expense. ;)

BiNS is mostly by Jon Bounds a Birmingham based social web consultant, producer and writer., You can hire him to work on your social web campaigns or anything really—he's not fussy. Follow him on twitter or drop him an email.

There's also the odd bit of stuff from Danny Smith.

Feel free to send us anything you're interested in - or think we might be.
