What ‘culture’ do you do?

Brum is, as you’ll no doubt be aware, is bidding to be UK City of Culture 2013. The final bid has to be in in May and getting a full picture of what culture is for Birmingham is and important part of it. We’ve already had Cliff Richard and heavy metal ballet suggested — but what do people actually get up to? One idea to capture that is to let everyone contribute to a one day celebration of all Birmingham’s cultural activity. For 24 hours from midday on Friday 23rd April to midday on Saturday 24th anyone can blog anything cultural they’re doing on the bid website (it’ll be at http://birminghamculture.org/blog) — you contribute via email. Anything sent to blog@birminghamculture.org will make the site — pictures video or audio included. I think this is the opportunity to show all that stuff that’s going on that doesn’t usually get publicity — culture is a pretty wide thing; are you watching football and singing? In a book club, out doing some parkour? All three at the same time? From the grottiest punk gig to the, er,  soppiest punk gig, it’d be good if someone was there and recording it in some...

The Harborne Mile – a blog for Harbone

A nascent blog for Harborne, I'd usually wait until a site had more than a couple of posts before mentioning but this one has some pedigree as it's been started by recently-ex-Birmingham Post Editor Marc Reeves. At least it should be well spelt, anyway. Good luck to The Harborne Mile

Birmingham Graffiti – new blog

A photoblog for graffiti (or graffitti according to the header) in Brum. Nice to see it isn't making any artistic judgements or focussing on some spurious 'art' division.

Mayor Blog

Mayor Blog

Uploaded with plasq‘s Skitch! The Mayor has a blog after all, it seems. Cllr Michael Wilkes has been blogging sporadically for almost a year. He’s posted a few bits since he became mayor, and let this little tit-bit slip: “I also propose to continue the use of my personal blog to highlight aspects of my civic role for the City of Birmingham. Clearly, once the Lord Mayor’s official blog is up and running on the City Council’s website, I will maintain that, and not this personal blog.” I wonder when that blog will be. Cllr, we’re here to offer you advice should you need it — see you at a Brum Bloggers meet soon? Hat tip, unbelivably, to Forward.

Mayor regenerates, website doesn’t

Mayor regenerates, website doesn’t

Brum is having a new Lord Mayor. Beowulf playing, hobbit fan (and Professor) Coun Michael Wilkes was “handed the chain” on the 19th. Previous Lord Mayor Coun Chauhdry Rashid is now deputy mayor. Coun Rashid, you may recall has a website — the wonderfully URL’d lordmayor.org — we were hoping for blogging from him, but sadly the site isn’t updated much (nor does it look to be council run, official stuff is here). Is he going to hand over the virtual keys, no sign yet? And while were at it Coun Wilkes, do you fancy setting up a blog? I’ve just grabbed birminghammayor.wordpress.com and you can have it whenever you like. Image from lolitics.

Flatpack Blog

Eleanor McKeown from Electric Sheep, a quarterly cinema magazine published from London, is blogging loads of Flatpack stuff. Seeing Brum from the outsider's point of view too, it's a really good read. She's even staying at the back-to-backs.

Why The Big Paws?

Why The Big Paws?

Rhubarb Radio has kindly consented to allow your very own BiNS-ers Jon & Jules to have a show — on the internet radio and everything. It’ll be what you’d expect from us — intelligent, amusing, cool, and featuring ELO (maybe). We’d love you to listen to us live (at Rhubarb Radio.com — click on the ‘Listen Live’ button) so you can abuse us via Twitter or email — the show is on Saturday mornings between 8am and 10am. But if you’re not awake, or by a computer there’s ways of listening again on the website. The show’s got its own blog – thebigpaws.co.uk where we’ll post track listings and links to any stuff we mention that has links. Follow The Big Paws on Twitter for the easiest way to talk to us during the show. We will also be live-tweeting our track list. (What is Twitter? Here’s a handy guide to get you started.) There’s a facebook group, if that’s the sort of thing you like. Our studio dogsbody will be collecting any messages or requests (we’ll only play good stuff tho’). So tune in at 8am Saturday, you know it makes sense.

Castle Bromwich, online information website

Castle Bromwich dot net is a new site devoted to everyone’s fave Bromwich, apart who those of you who prefer other Bromwiches. It’s got a blog, a forum, events listings, all sorts of local info. It’s really nice. I’m not a Castle Brom expert and I clicked on the Parish Council section expecting minutes of the latest meeting, but instead found myself reading about: “the primary concerns of the Council were the primitive sewage systems which the Medical Officer of Health believed caused  widespread Scarlet Fever. By the start of the twentieth century sewage improvement schemes were started, but it was to be a further twenty-five years before they were fully effective.” I hope they’ve sorted that out, best of luck with the blog — local blogs is the future.
