Animals!

Animals!

The planning a application for the Chamberlain Square beach is now up on the Council Site (can’t do direct links, you have to go here and search for “C/01989/09/BCC” — its number): Uploaded with plasq‘s Skitch! Read that through again: “Temporary installation of summer beach area with accompanying flora and fauna“. Flora and fauna. Fauna, “the animal life of any particular region” (Wikipedia). Other than the ice cream polar bear: and the croc: what are we getting? Live animals, hmmm (or maybe a cliché used to sound clever without understanding it?, we’ve all done it) — I vote GIANT FOXES.

Sand gets everywhere

Sand gets everywhere

Beach comes back to Brum – Birmingham Mail We heard that it wasn’t happening, but the Council have found another airline to sponsor the Chamberlain Square beach: Punters will be able to relax on the dunes from 11am to 7pm every day from July 4 and, as before, entry will be free.

Bull Ring boat, and Rainbow beach

Bull Ring boat, and Rainbow beach

Dave Harte has found a picture of how the Bull Ring Boat will look this summer: He’s also found details of a ‘Mr Sexy Legs’ competition and the usual music supplied by Galaxy. The boat also has a logo: It’ll be open from noon on the 4th of June. Fans of sand will be glad to know that the Rainbow pub in Digbeth with be having a traditional brummie beach this summer. (Thanks to Tom Scotney for the tip).

Brum made the whistles on the Titanic you know

Have you seen that advert for Smirnoff? The one were all the debris is sucked from the sea to deomonstrate purity (purity for vodka being a big selling point) culminating with a huge ship leaning against a petrol garage? Well that was the first though that went through my mind when I heard that the Bull Ring was to have a cruise ship built in St Martins Square as it’s summer attraction this year. The nautical theme no doubt following on from last years “award winning” beach, the ship will be able to hold 200 people. More details will, perhaps at some point, be available on the Bull Ring website.

Buy 365 days of Brum, get one free

Buy 365 days of Brum, get one free

It’s that time of next year again, when in a flagrant attempt to pay for all the incidental costs of B:iNS we unleash the Birmingham:It’s Not Shit Calendar on the suspecting public. It is, we’ve seen calendars in the shops. As always it features 13 shots of real Brum, with no spin and only a tiny few adjustments in Photoshop to try and make it look warm in the summer months (well did you try getting pictures of the sun this year?). While it isn’t all pretty, it at least isn’t 12 shots of canalside living. It includes, the beach under Spaghetti Junction, Mr Egg, The Pantomime Horse Grand National and you can see tiny versions of the inside pictures here. We’ve got two versions for sale from Lulu.com, a full height version at £12.99 (cover pictured) and a slightly cheaper folded version at £7.99. Both include all your Bank Holidays, as well as a few special B:iNS chosen dates and anniversaries. (There’s also one in our Cafepress shop might be cheaper with the dollar exchange rate being over 2-1, have a look see what you think. This one doesn’t have special dates, just normal holidays.) It’s a perfect...

Beach 6 – and it’s catching

Despite the mixed response to Birmingham’s summer of five (? sorry, genuinely lost count now) land-locked beaches – guess what? That’s right, the Rugby Football Union are brining Beach rugby to Birmingham in Centenary Square. Those that fancy cauliflower ears, odd shaped balls AND sand between them should pop along on Wednesday 15 August. If you’re desperate for your fake sand fix before then, you may take a trip to the wilds of the Black Country and visit Halesowen by the Sea. In a devastatingly original touch, on 12 August the centre of the town will be blessed with it’s own beach. Lack of a Halesowen: It’s Not Shit site leads the only internet based news of this being in a pdf of a council meeting from June. Rest assured though it will include Punch and Judy, live singing groups, face painters, “animal” balloon makers, small fairground rides, *donkey rides* (yay!) and Halesowen sticks of rock.

Battle of the sands

Battle of the sands

Beach two : Originally uploaded by bounder. Despite the official opening, and the chance to see Mike Whitby in Bemuda shorts, being postponded due to inclement weather – Brum’s second beach opened today. In Chamberlain Sq, it does have water in the shape of the Joseph Chamberlain memorial and is slightly larger than the Bull Ring’s beach. Two scantily clad ‘Rio Carnival’-style dancers with headdresses were enjoying the sand, along with a class of schoolkids and a metal crocodile, while the big screen played soothing seaside scenes and (really) seagulls circled over the council house. (Is it just me, or do the rest of you whistle Vanessa Paradis’ no 6 smash -not the Taxi one- whenever you’re confronted with a bmi baby logo?)
