ArtsFest mapped

The Artsfest programme isn’t easy to search,  and the venue map isn’t comprehensive – so with the help of LiveBrum’s by venue and day split-up of the listings I’ve started this Google map of the whats and wheres (the whens – apart from by day – proving just too much effort): View Larger Map It’s open to editing and improvement by all – go see.

Be bright at night

Be bright at night

Light Night, is being held as part of this year’s ArtsFest (which is fast approaching —12th to the 14th of September). While I struggle to see anything particularity arty about “architectural lighting of iconic city centre buildings and iconic landmarks”, it promises to be an interesting evening – especially if they project the painting from the art gallery of penguins onto the Town Hall as they seem to be suggesting: (that’s this one). Review: Blast, part of ArtsFest 2007

Review: Blast, part of ArtsFest 2007

A steampunk symphony, a cacophony of hot noise, fireworks, flames and the first film ever exhibited in public. Blast, one of the opening events of this year’s ArtsFest, is quite possibly the largest, most boiling and definitely the most whistley performance you’ll see ever (and it’s on tomorrow as well) see. A blast on a horn, a blast of air, blast as a manifesto Vorticist in sound and steam, it was history, an alternate one where steam was harnessed as mammoth-scale entertainment rather than to drive industry. One of the first working steam trains was made in Brum, the station was a wonderful canvas, pyrophones are the chainsaw massacre of defined sound. Can you play the heavy industry? They did. If I wrote for the music press I’d call it Mad Max meets The Clangers, on acid probably. I’d also make a crack about Richard Wilson (The Turner prize nominee involved) and end on… I don’t believe it, or something. But I don’t anymore, so I’ll say it was bloody great, say that if there’s nothing else good at ArtsFest this year it was still worthwhile, and point you to my Flickr pics. And to CiB’s preview for something...

ArtsFest, what goes on

I have in my hand a piece of paper, it says what’s on at ArtsFest this year (14 – 16 Sept). No linky it’s not on the (curiously orange) website as yet. Big news is that the headliners of Friday night’s indie event are Ocean Colour Scene rather than the rumoured Twang or Editors – or Fuzzbox as I was secretly hoping. For those that like loud guitars Kerrang! are having a stage in Victoria Square with computerclub, The Filmore Gears, UXL and TBC (sorry can’t find their myspace). More laid back music at Penny Blacks in the Mailbox (it’s a bar, so no kids) with The Kings of Spain and Mike Bethel amongst others. Actually there seems to be tons of music on this year (more than last?), with stages in Brindley Place and in loads of bars and cafes, The Yardbird, The Flapper, The Prince Of Wales. Other stuff that has caught my eye is Codpiece Theatre about who I know nothing other than they have some connection with the University of Warwick – great name tho’, Punch and Judy (who I really hope aren’t a band) on the Chamberlain Square beach – surely what the sandpit...
