Brum Ghost Walk on The Gadget Show this Monday

The Gadget Show will feature the darker side of Birmingham in its episode due to be broadcast on Monday 2nd May 2011. “To try out posture-enhancing shoes, presenter Jon Bentley joined one of Birmingham Ghost Walk’s two regular guides, Ian Braisby, who led the group around the Jewellery Quarter and into the city centre, telling tales of hauntings, murders and dark deeds from the city’s past. With some coaching from Ian, Jon Bentley, armed with a hangman’s noose, told the story of the last public hanging in Birmingham. Ian, a Blue Badge Tourist Guide based in the city, was also filmed trying and discussing the shoes, which contrasted with the Victorian undertaker style outfit he wears for all of the tours.” More information on Birmingham Ghost Walks.

Dogging up King’s Heath

Pointed out on Twitter over the weekend is that the opening titles of Childrens’ ITV ‘classic’ Woof! (plot: boy turns into dog at inopportune moments — Billy’s Boots with more fleas) are set in luscious King’s Heath. The dog wanders down the High Street and surprises a vicar who’s hanging around the toilets on the corner of Vicarage Road. Also the setting for this classic bit of filming.

Bear in front (of Millennium Point)

The safest way to avoid the cloying car-crash of Children in Need on BBC One might just be to get out to the local CiN event at Millennium Point. There you’re guaranteed not to witness newsreaders “getting into the spirit of it”, but instead see (this year at least) legendary bhangra artist Malkit Singh and ascending star Jaz Dhami head the star studded line up for the ‘Pudsey Does Bhangra’ appeal show. It’s on 6pm to 11pm on Friday 20th November  at Millennium Point, and — while you should no-doubt have your donation hat on — it’s free.

Hustle worth the hastle?

Back in March we mentioned that the next series of Hustle was to be filmed in Brum — the man from UNCLE is thinking about living in the Rotunda. It’s now official, as Screen West Midlands are announcing it and their involvement/investment in making it happen. Whether they need to pay to make things like this happen is up for discussion, if major drama series can’t survive without “funding” what hope for any television production? But it is important where telly happens — even if it really shouldn’t matter were programmes are located. Take The Gadget Show for example, a show about gadgets, it doesn’t matter a jot for the content of the programme but place does influence attitudes and the Birmingham-ness of the Gadget Show does seep out. When demonstrating video blogging the slightly odd older bloke ranted about how nice Central Library was, ELO is used on the soundtrack a little more than it probably should be and when they do little location pieces it’s often Brum in the background. Good for us, good for the city’s self image. We want “the con” to be “on” in Mr Egg.

Rustie Lee at Cadbury’s Factory: “31 years? Goodness gracious, you should know how to straighten your nuts by now!” followed up with a particularly filthy laugh.
