Beach 6 – and it’s catching

Despite the mixed response to Birmingham’s summer of five (? sorry, genuinely lost count now) land-locked beaches – guess what? That’s right, the Rugby Football Union are brining Beach rugby to Birmingham in Centenary Square. Those that fancy cauliflower ears, odd shaped balls AND sand between them should pop along on Wednesday 15 August. If you’re desperate for your fake sand fix before then, you may take a trip to the wilds of the Black Country and visit Halesowen by the Sea. In a devastatingly original touch, on 12 August the centre of the town will be blessed with it’s own beach. Lack of a Halesowen: It’s Not Shit site leads the only internet based news of this being in a pdf of a council meeting from June. Rest assured though it will include Punch and Judy, live singing groups, face painters, “animal” balloon makers, small fairground rides, *donkey rides* (yay!) and Halesowen sticks of rock.

Friendly local rivalry

The Blues are, rather foolishly in my book, asking people to sign a petition on the government petitions website to try and help get a new stadium. Some hope of that. How did I find out about that? From this lovely article on a villa blog. Tell you what, those clowns of the Small Heath Alliance over the South side of the City have been on the funny juice again. Not happy with their Meccano ground as it is, they are asking Joe Public to sign a petition to the Government, to support a new stadium in the Birmingham City boundaries, so that they can have a nice new ground to play football in. Good to see all right thinking sports fans are thinking rightly about the project.

The first of a series of ‘London 2012: Ask the Team” meetings will be staged in Birmingham on 25 June. Tessa Jowell and Seb Coe will be joined on stage by Sir Roy McNulty, acting chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, 2000 Olympic heptathlon gold medallist Denise Lewis and Councillor Chris Saint, who heads the local 2012 Nations and Regions group, working to ensure 2012′s benefits reach the West Midlands. more here

you wait billions of years for a beach and then four come along all at once

my spies inform me of a record breaking fourth ‘beach’ to hit Brum this summer – this time in centernary square for the beach volley ball “urban gran prix” in August. Has someone got a job lot of sand? What I wouldn’t give to be a builders’ merchant right now.
