Nice statue, shame about the bloody goblins

Nice statue, shame about the bloody goblins

We love public art, you’ll not see Bi:NS campaign against a statue (unless it blocks the enterance to a pub). We love this weird metal ‘green man’ thing. We don’t really like the overlong and dull (tho’ meticulsly planned granted) work of JRR Tolkien – and we definately think his brief abode in Birmingham is overplayed. Cool idea of getting interweb geeks around the world to pay for it tho’ via BBC News

see your Name in Lights

Curly-haired fcuk-er Trevor Beattie (Brummie lest we forget), Guardian & Newsnight Review’s Mark Lawson and her off Big Brother Alison Hammond are amongst the judges for a top competition that’ll see the winner get their name in huge letters on the side of the Central Library. It’s all part of this year’s Fierce! – and I think the biggest thing they’ve ever done. Name in Lights is a Fierce! Festival 10th anniversary commission to artist Joshua Sofaer, who devised the concept for the competition and installation. Go enter – Name in Lights hey – why not post your nominations here in the comments – we’ll see if we can’t get a bit of momentum behind them.

make it a date

a big B:iNS ‘shout out’ (ahem) again to Created in Birmingham – the blog that keeps you up to date with anything ‘creative’ in Brum. this might be a feature they’ve had for a while, but i’ve only just stumbled upon it – for those of you that use Google Calendar to rule your lives, just go here, click a button and all the exhibitons events and that are added to your calendar. best of all, the CIB goblins do all the updating, so you don’t have to! you may end up never in the house again of course, but that’s at your own risk

My Birmingham ‘Street Atlas’

My Birmingham ‘Street Atlas’

JB Birmingham Street Atlas : Originally uploaded by bounder. Roads, like music, crystallize memories. Here are some roads that make me remember. Why not make your own ‘street atlas’? See it in all it’s glory here I’m not saying why, or where they are – you can guess if you like. They are all in Brum tho’, I had to make a cut off somewhere and it might leave room for a follow-up that isn’t just Brum. It was actually quite an emotional experience in a couple of places (not to mention dangerous when standing in the midlle of the Pershore Rd to get ‘just the right angle’). See it as a flickr set. It’d be great if people made their own and we eventually got a shot of every road in Birmingham!

brmb on cutting edge shocker

brmb on cutting edge shocker

I hate brmb, it’s nothing personal, I hate most commercial radio stations. However, someone in their marketing department has their finger on the pulse and have made the most of new trend for reverse graffiti. Spotted on Holloway Circus (affectionately known as the ‘Pagoda Island’ according to Five Live) this morning. God knows what V-day is – Valentines Day? some crappy competition which humiliates some poor listener or even puts their health at risk?
