Brummie of the Year 2008 - Nominations open

Birmingham: It's Not Shit loves Birmingham and has loads of news and features. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed.

Who will follow in the bootsteps of landlord extraordinaire John Tighe, blues hobo Charlie Mitton, dancer-under-the-stars Malik, cricketer Jason Furnell and red panda Babu? Only the people of Birmingham can decide — after the nominations have been assessed by a panel.

But nominations are now open and you’re welcome to list any Brummie or Brum resident that has put Birmingham on the map this year. How about “world’s worst boxer” Peter Buckley (although I’m sure he’s better than me)? Or Brummies for Obama leader Adam Smith?

Maybe there’s an old dear who’ll be so excited by Kilroy in the Jungle that the orange man of British politics will triumph? Or is this the year that Metal will force it’s denim and leather clad way into the forefront? Wouldn’t it be great if concrete won out and we’ll recognise John Madin architectural genius behind the Central Library?

All that we know is that the nominations wil close at 9am Sunday 23rd November and the voting will open the next day. Leave your nominations, with a reason, in the comments — and feel free to discuss amongst yourselves.

[EDIT:] This is the time for nominations, you’ll get the chance to vote later - the weight of numbers of nominations for one person won’t effect anything. Keep your powder dry for the campaign. [/EDIT]

Birmingham Central: Big City Plan

The ever exhaustive Birmingham Central blog has been rounding up a lot of stuff about the council's Big City Plan. Maybe I'm just jaded, but I haven't got round to reading it all yet. [link]

Harborne gets a website

It uses frames, and won’t be easily searchable, but it’s a website for “Harborne Village” all the same. [link]

This is really nice, and shows that the illustrator may well have been up King’s Heath High St.

Pebble Mill at One, by No Rock And Roll Fun

No Rock And Roll Fun is spending Sunday at Pebble Mill, digging up the oddest and best musical perfromances from the show from YouTube. They feature "pointless shots of the band performing, long-lens stylee, from outside the asbestos-riddled Birmingham HQ of the BBC; and a bored-looking audience sat in seats whose handrails give the impression of something between veal heading for slaughter and the world's worst rollercoaster." Jack Kerouac’s ‘On the Road’ Scroll in Brum

The famous amphetamine-fueled toilet roll of excess on which Kerouac wrote his masterwork will be in the city at the Barber institute from Dec 3rd. Linking to Created in Brum as they’ve popped the press release details online and I can’t be bothered… [link]

Quiet time

The Eye of the Storm is a great big video art project. One hundred and fifty people from around Brum  (including Clare Short) were interviewed to discover each’s individual attempts to “manage the stresses of modern living and find calm within the storm”.

Next year, the Birmingham stories will be incorporated in an outdoor digital art installation in Birmingham City Centre. Inspired by the way groups of starlings fly together, Director Marc Silver will incorporate images of birds to suggest more collaborative ways of living.

You can contribute, making your own piece and uploading it to YouTube — instructions on the site.
