Step aboard the Big City Plan Bus today

The “Beyond Midnight” bus, which has more info about the Big City Plan (that will decide what happens in Birmingham over the next 20 years), is in the city centre today and Highgate tomorrow. Only just heard about this and we’re too late to let you know that it was in Ladywood yesterday. Please go along if you can, in great numbers, to find out more about the Big City Plan, have your say and show the council that we really care about our city. The details: Tuesday 13 January City Centre * 9am – 3pm, Edgbaston Street, Markets area * 3pm – 8pm, Victoria Square Wednesday 14 January Highgate * 12 noon – 3pm, Joseph Chamberlain College * 3pm -5pm, Gooch Street shops * 5pm – 7pm, Stanhope St Youth and Community Centre * 7pm – 9pm, St Martins Youth Centre Gooch Street, Highgate, Birmingham B12 Not quite sure why it’s called the “Beyond Midnight” bus, as it only seems to be open during the day and early evening. Oh well, I suppose 9am is beyond midnight. If you can eat After Eights at any time of day, we’re sure you can visit the Beyond Midnight bus too...

Last chance to see Bournville save the world

Last chance to see Bournville save the world

After reading in the Birmingham News about the Bournville ‘Eco House‘, I decided to take a trip there this avo to see it for myself. The house, built in 1929 and owned by Bournville Village Trust, has been refurbished and now contains over 50 eco-friendly features. It’s one of the very first homes of its age to receive the Government’s Eco Homes Excellent accreditation. The house (at 264 Selly Oak Road) was officially opened by none other than David Bellamy and remains open to the public until the 14th (Friday) from 2pm until 7pm. Then the lucky tenants move in. I decided I wanted to go and see it in daylight because, as a SAD sufferer, I was particularly interested in seeing the sun tubes (see photo), which bring natural sunlight from the roof right into the house. These didn’t disappoint. The house had three of them and all were really bright. No idea how much those things cost but will definitely look into it further. The house also had a ‘bore hole’ in the front garden which, according to the bloke that showed me round, went down 65m – mind boggling! The geothermal energy is used to heat...

The Brummie GLC?

if you like Goldie Lookin Chain or Biz Bizley, then you should definitely check out Fraz ‘n’ Gus and their awesome tracks such as “West Brom”, “Moseley”, “Northfield Nan” and “My Old Man”. Fraz and Gus are two born and bred Brummies who have been living in the area all their lives. Fraz (Faisal Rashid) plays in local bands covering all kinds of genres and was once described by fellow brummie Malcolm Stent, as the only Pakistani Scotsman who thinks he’s an Irish Brummie.
