Blind Dave Heeley joins the Lawk Naach World Record attempt
Dance Sansaar are delighted to announce that Blind Dave is joining us for our World Record attempt for the largest Bhangra and Giddha dance. This will be made on 30th June 2012 at Victoria Park, Smethwick, when 2012 people come together in celebration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The attempt is part of Lawk Naach, the largest Cultural Olympiad project in the West Midlands, run by Dance Sansaar. Over the past 8 months, 24,000 people of all ages and cultural backgrounds have taken part in Indian dance workshops around Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Herefordshire, Sandwell, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Solihull, Walsall, Warwickshire, Wolverhampton and Worcester.
2012 people from these regions will come together for a grand finale event, attempting to setting a new Guinness World Record. There will also be a showcase of traditional folk arts.
Lawk Naach is part of Dancing for the Games, which is inspired by London 2012 and part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands. It has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, which is creating a lasting impact from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by funding ideas and local talent to inspire creativity across the UK, as well as Arts Council England and Advantage West Midlands.
Blind Dave – the first blind person in the world to have completed the ultimate endurance challenge 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents, said: “I’m really excited about being a part of this enormous diverse project. It is a great celebration for the torch relay, to bring the community together in a fun and interactive way. I’m not the best Bhangra dancer in the world, but I’m going give it a shot! I believe laughter and sports make the world go around!”
The World record attempt will take place at the Sandwell and Birmingham Mela, this two day event is the West Midlands biggest Asian Mela.
