Open Up Lobbying Event

The Sunday Times’ recent investigation into the Conservative Party’s
fundraising operation focussed the public’s attention on the influence
that can be bought within our political system. We may have been
shocked by the frank language used by former Conservative party
treasurer Peter Cruddas but the news that money talks within our
political system came as no surprise.

Meanwhile the government’s consultation process on its proposals for a
register of lobbyists is currently underway.  The minister in charge
of lobbying regulation, Mark Harper, will be speaking at a public
meeting in Birmingham to discuss the proposals in April just before
the consultation process closes:

Open Up Lobbying with Mark Harper MP

Wednesday 11th of April – 7pm to 9pm

The Birmingham Midland Institute, Margaret Street, Birmingham (see map).

In addition to the minister, we have an especially strong line up of
experts to address the meeting: Spinwatch director Tamasin Cave,
Friends of the Earth West Midlands campaigns organiser Chris Crean and
Unlock Democracy’s own director Peter Facey.

The coalition have pledged to create a register of lobbyists, but
unless the public show enough interest in the issue, it is likely to
be watered down or forgotten.

We hope you can join us on the 11th April to show your support for
opening up lobbying. We want you to be part of the debate to tell Mark
Harper, the Minister in charge of political and constitutional reform,
what you think.

Register at http://action.unlockdemocracy.org.uk/page/event/detail/general/jrc

We also need to help us promoting this meeting to make it big. Can you
send this to your supporter mailing lists, friends and family?  I’ve
attached a sample email, tweet and links to the event page on facebook
and on our website.

We would appreciate your support on an issue which is crucial to the
health of our democracy.

All the best,

Emily Randall

Subject: In the wake of ‘Cash for Cameron’, it’s time for our members
to help open up lobbying

Unlock Democracy and Take Back Parliament Birmingham have teamed up to
host an evening with Mark Harper MP, Chris Crean from Friends of the
Earth, Tamasin Cave from Spinwatch, and special guests from the local
community to talk about opening up lobbying.

The events of the last few days have focussed the public’s attention
on the access and influence that can be bought within our political
system. The coalition have pledged to create a register of lobbyists,
but unless the public show enough interest in the issue, it is likely
to be watered down or forgotten. The government has been holding a
consultation on lobbying which is coming to an end on the 13th of
April 2012. It is in our interests to have a more transparent lobbying
system, and we want our members to have a strong presence at this
meeting.

The evening will take place on Wednesday the 11th of April between 7pm
and 9pm at the Birmingham Midland Institute, Margaret Street,
Birmingham (see map: http://bit.ly/H0VOXv).  Register here:
