Setting up a Blues Supporters’ Trust – A Way For Fans To Effect Change

Call for interest for people to help set up a Supporters' Trust for the Blues over on Often Partisan. These are: "an organisation built by fans on democratic principles to give themselves a legitimate voice in the running of their club. Birmingham City have in the last twelve months been active in helping the supporters clubs grow and become an active part of the club itself, but an umbrella organisation is needed so that when times are hard, there is a focal point for people to rally behind. It also can do things like buy shares in a football club – which then give fans a real say in how it is run; get fans appointed to board room level to ensure that the club doesn’t lose touch with it’s fanbase, and most importantly give a united voice which can influence media reporting on the fans."

I’m a Celebrity Get me to a Birmingham City Council Event

Much amusement to be had I would imagine at this spreadsheet of ‘Celebrity’ speakers engaged by the council since 2005. Have a look online and see what you can find, I’ve spotted ‘Chico’, ‘Duncan out of Blue’…

Danny Smith: The Wasteland

It’ll come as no surprise that I was a bookish child, I rarely left the house to go out and play and would opt to stay in the massive musty smelling Austin Maxi that my father drove rather than go play in the the sun on whatever day trip my parents would take us on. Evesham or Stourport all enjoyed from the the smeared window of a car built like a tank glanced at by bored eyes while turning the page of whatever comic or book I head stuck my head in. Its why I’m such a good traveller now, I either sleep or read during the boring bits. So the memories I have of the the little strip of green known locally as the Kala’s I am suspicious of, I never really went outside so why are my memories so strong? So vivid? Are they borrowed from my school-friends’ stories? Squirrelled away in my mind that expects a Wonder Years montage of important childhood memories. Its more likely that the fantasy of being so bookish and anti social are an exaggerated construct to assert my difference and nerdy credentials. Yet, I still don’t know how to ride a...

PUBLIC MEETING IN BIRMINGHAM ON THE BOMBING OF LIBYA AND THE ARAB REVOLUTION

PUBLIC MEETING IN BIRMINGHAM ON THE BOMBING OF LIBYA AND THE ARAB REVOLUTION

PRESS RELEASE(BhamStWC-wmPSC)meeting25.07.11.docx Download this file A Joint Birmingham Stop the War Coalition/ West Midlands Palestine Solidarity Campaign Public Meeting STOP THE BOMBING OF LIBYA: IMPERIALISM AND THE ARAB REVOLUTION Date: Monday, 25th July 2011 Time: 7.00pm Venue: Council House, Victoria Square, Birmingham B1 1BB Event: Public Meeting Speakers:  Chris Nineham (Stop the War Coalition National Officer)                Adam Hanieh (Palestinian activist and lecturer at SOAS)                Chaired by Naeem Malik The Arab uprisings are an inspiration to everyone who supports freedom and democracy. They are also a direct challenge to Western interests in the Middle East. Having learnt nothing from the disasters of Afghanistan and Iraq, our government has helped launch a new war against Libya-the third major Western attack on a Muslim country by the West in a decade. On the one hand they claim the war is a humanitarian mission, on the other both Cameron and have admitted the aim is regime change – which makes it illegal under international law. The idea that the West has switched over to the side of the Arab people is laughable when they continue to support the most brutal regimes in the region, including Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, at a...

This 5 x 45 minute documentary tells the…

From ATVLand in Colour This 5 x 45 minute documentary tells the story of the affectionately known ‘ATVLand’ – the ATV Centre in Birmingham, from its beginnings to its ultimate closure in 1997 and beyond, celebrating some of the great programmes that came from the studios throughout its working life. The DVD includes a mix of rare archive footage, much of which has not been seen since broadcast, and interviews with those who worked at the centre including Jim Bowen, Barbara Bradbury, Reg Harcourt, Peter Harris, Diana Mather, Wendy Nelson, Jane Rossington, Debbie Shore, Chris Tarrant, Shaw Taylor, Gary Terzza, Bob Warman and Jo Wheeler PART ONE begins with a brief history of midlands broadcaster Associated Television (ATV) and its studio base in Aston, with anecdotes on some of the programmes produced there from those who were involved. The story then follows changes in the ITV system, leaving ATV in need of new premises for the age of colour broadcasting leading to the eventual opening of ATV Centre in 1970. PARTS TWO and THREE tell the story of the ATV Centre in operation throughout the 1970s, remembered by those who were involved and concentrating on the types of programmes...

Tom Lennon tells us about Captain…

Hell comes to Birmingham Tom Lennon tells us about Captain Midlands: “if Birmingham-based cinemagoers want a superhero they can really identify with then they’ll have to look elsewhere. Luckily, an ideal candidate already exists. His name? Captain Midlands. Yes, that sprawling and overpopulated metafictional monstrosity that is the Marvel Comics Universe actually contains a patriotic, shield-slinging, living legend of World War II who is also a Brummie. If the likes of Captains America and Britain are (in the language of the aviation industry) national flag-carriers, then Captain Midlands is  a hyperlocal hero.” (more at This is Captain Midlands | Tom Lennon’s Blog) from Brumblr, the scrapbook of Brum web ephemera:

Gripped by the Nutts

Gripped by the Nutts

Down Poplar Road in King’s Heath is the sewing machine shop of Frank L Nutt: And if you travel down to near Star City you see signs for the sewing machine shop of one S Nutt: And I’ve been told of Walsall’s DC Nutt and Sutton’s M Nutt. It’s fascinating to me, none of the shops or website refer to any of the others…are we dealing with a schism of Dassler brothers proportions (you’ll remember that Adi Dassler set up adidas, his brother Rudolph: Puma) ? Of course we could just ask them, but it’s more fun to speculate: do you know any more Nutts? Have you been assaulted by one of them?
