Pecha Kucha Birmingham

Pecha Kucha is an unpronouncble and frankly stupid name for what is a fairly simple and interesting idea: people give talks, with slides. They're allowed 20 seconds for each of 20 slides, which means the talks are a snack-ish 6 minutes odd. Here's videos of talks from a recent event where the theme of the talks had to be something to do with Brum.

Signing On — UB40 documentary

“2010 is the 30th anniversary of UB40′s first album “Signing Off”. This documentary, hosted by Ranking Roger from “The Beat”, was produced by Birmingham City University to celebrate UB40′s landmark debut and the band’s nationwide tour to promote its re-release. It features fresh interviews with members of the band – along with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders and producer Bob Lamb – amongst others. The documentary explores life in Birmingham in the early eighties 80′s and reveals the band’s strong polictial beliefs. UB40 went on to become one of the world’s biggest reggae acts – but their debut album “Signing Off” still stands as one of their most influential releases. This 45 minute documentary pays tribute to the band while showcasing hits and remixes from the album – and detailing the story behind its recording – 30 years ago… ” Ub40: The 30th Anniversary Of “Signing Off” Documentary by Sam Coley on Mixcloud

Birmingham Book Festival next month

Birmingham Book Festival next month

A Press Release we can’t be bothered to rewrite, but that might interest you:  Information can be found on our website at www.birminghambookfestival.org, or from me at joanne@birminghambookfestival.org.   The festival is in its eleventh year running in the autumn of each year; this year’s Festival is taking place between the 5th and 21st October. The Festival also ran a one day event last April for the first time, called the “Spring Thing”, which was a full day of festival events featuring a whole host of authors, writers and poets from all over the country.   The highlights of this year’s Festival include talks by Birmingham authors, Jonathan Coe, who will be promoting his new novel The Terrible Privacy of Maxwell Sim, and Catherine O’Flynn, who has just completed her second novel; The News Where You Are. We also have appearances from novelists John O’Farrell, David Nicholls and Lionel Shriver, as well as events featuring comedienne Jenny Éclair, journalist Fatima Bhutto and poet Jackie Kay. This year’s festival is decidedly international and multi-genre in its line-up!   I’ve also attached some of our promotional images, a press release and some information sheets about a couple of our authors. If...

Colour Presents a night of exploratory soundscapes, hypnotic techno and space travel.

A Press Release we can’t be bothered to rewrite, but that might interest you: Just wanted to drop you a line to tell you about a new show happening in Birmingham in October. It will be a night of exploratory soundscapes, hypnotic-techno and space travel. COLOUR presents port-royal, Millimetrik & Arc VelTuesday 19 October 7.30pm The Victoria John Bright Street, Birmingham, B1 1BN. 0121 6339439Cost: £5.00, available on the door. port-royal Hailing from Genoa, Italy, port-royal take the established structures of post-rock and inject new life into it, restoring its ability to thrill washed out synths, pulsing, 4-on-the-floor beats and ethereal vocals. Signed to Oakland label n5MD, their third record Dying In Time sees a new melodic focus, with the dream-like quality of the band’s previous work making room for infectious, catchy ambient pop. MillimetrikMillimetrik is Québec City resident Pascal Asselin. Pascal’s music unites his love of hip-hop, electronica and ambient music, but takes these influences to somewhere entirely his own. Over the course of four albums the music has evolved, his fascination with ambient textures and atmospheres becoming more layered, warm and melodic. Earning favourable comparisons to artists as diverse as Boards of Canada and DJ Shadow, new...
