Bathe your eyes

Bathe your eyes

Beautiful set of pics from inside Moseley Road Baths from this weekend’s Birmingham Flickr meet. They’re the work of Emma Jones,  who has certainly developed an attachment to the building: it’s in a dreadful state. There seem to be a lot of little things that could be done to save disaster in the future, but it’s almost as if they’re letting it run down on purpose. For example, there’s a pinhole leak in a water pipe above the unused pool. All it would take to fix it is a stepladder (it’s not very high at all) and some epoxy tape (or even a bit of rubber and a pipe clamp, which would last a few years)… but no. Instead, this tiny leak has already rusted all the metal in the seats and railings on the two stands below it, decayed all the plastic and rubber on the two floors – and is presumably therefore destabilising the structure underneath. The Friends of Moseley Road Baths are having another fundraiser on the 14th Aug — and the old place can certainly do with the love.

Beauty, mystery and dreams and the A38(M)

‘In my youth, I lived in the shadow of Britain’s largest motorway intersection, Spaghetti Junction. It was a thing of beauty, mystery and dreams.’ So says Ian Emes who has produced ‘Flightpath Tegel’ a film, a homage to JG Ballard’s ‘Concrete Island’. A piece of work that makes spaghetti look even more beautiful than it normally does. Thanks to the circuit phantom for spotting it.

New T-shirt design, maybe

What do you think? Worth getting these set up on the BiNS shop? R2D2 is of course a Brummie, played as he was by Kenny Baker — Star Trek Tastic. Thanks to Michael for the idea.

Danny Smith’s Guide to 2008 Pt12

Danny Smith was writing lots of guides to Brum for the Itchy guide, last year. It never happened, so we present his guide to the past in a number of parts (see all the parts): Costermongers 5 Dalton Way (0121) 2363791 Costers is a dinosaur of a rock pub and one of the last in Birmingham that makes up for its unwelcoming atmosphere by having a very loyal set of regulars. It is underground in both the musical and very physical sense of the word but is one of the few pubs not to benefit by the smoking ban because now you can see the shoddy vandalized décor and smell decades of stale beer. Costers is also home of the most uncomfortable seats and ugliest toilets in Birmingham. Treat this place like a historical theme park. Mon – Wed, 12noon – 11pm
Thu, 12noon – 12mn
Fri – Sat, 12noon – 1am
Sun, 5pm – 10.30pm The Black Horse 22 Jennens Road, Aston, Birmingham, B7 4EH Tel, 01213597108 Kurt Cobain delivered the lethal blow to Heavy Metal in the early nineties; by all accounts it was a mercy killing. Just over a decade later every city harbours the refugees in little die...

Greenbelt blog

I'm speaking a the Greenbelt festival in Cheltenham, three times (which came as a shock). I've not written anything to say yet, but it will be something along these lines. I'm mainly doing Birmingham and psychogeography, with a little bit of internets thrown in.

Friday Photo by Karen Strunks

Friday Photo by Karen Strunks

I have lived in Birmingham for over 20 years and had never attended the Birmingham Carnival. It was on last weekend and I decided I couldn’t let another year go by without experiencing it.   It’s a bi-annual event held in Perry Park. The carnival procession sets off from Handsworth Park and winds itself down the streets before reaching it’s destination 3 hours later. I was waiting like an excited child for the procession to arrive! Lorries blasted out music and colourful dancers energetically strutted their stuff behind them.   As well as the procession there was a fun fair, music and no forgetting good old hearty soul food. It’s a fabulous day out for everyone – Put it in your diary for 2011! :)

Harry Palmer: The Eccentic City £3 funding aid appeal

Harry Palmer: The Eccentic City £3 funding aid appeal

For some readers, you might be aware that The Eccentric City – the world’s first dedicated eccentric tabloid newspaper, is co-published/founded by myself and Simon Walker. As part of our investment of all things eccentric, we have delved into the triumphs of commissioning, giving away £1 each month to a much needed inspired eccentric idea. We have commissioned all sorts of things from a fairground Buddhist video ride, through to an on the spot commission in which we later received a 200 word letter from a person sharing his life time philosophy. We have sought to inspire work by those who have written stories on sheets of foil through to seed planting in brownfield estates… All of this can be read (with updates as we get them) at www.eccentriccity.co.uk £3 Urgent Appeal. This month we have commission Anna Chrystal to make her personal version of a snow globe (quite fitting for this winter season, sorry, summer season). Anna is requiring £3 in addition to the £1 we have just sent to her. The art work will involve her interest in fantasy and photo documentary which will include a Tudor twist. So if anyone can help The Eccentric City and...
