Is second place good enough to aim for?

I was surprised, and a little bit flattered I’ll admit, to be asked to be on the panel for Birmingham Future’s (Big Brand) debate “Is Birmingham A Second City?”, along with Ian Taylor, commercial director of Marketing Birmingham and David Clarke. Exalted company, but both very nice as it turned out. Here’s the ‘debate’ proposition (much longer and more detailed version here in the Birmingham Post): “Birmingham was the original hotbed of entrepreneurialism, innovation and cutting-edge technology, our ‘City of 100 Trades’ was a proud forerunner in the Industrial Revolution. Since then, we have suffered an image crisis – maligned in the media and the butt of many jokes despite huge strides in improving the built environment, infrastructure, amenities and leisure offer for the city’s inhabitants and visitors. So what can we, the next generation of city leaders, do to change these outdated perceptions of our city? Is the Second City banner, coveted by a number of other English cities, a positive or negative for Birmingham? If not the Second City, then what are we? The First City for Innovation? The Youthful City? Diverse City? International City? In this, the second Big Future Debate, you decide! Join your fellow...

Found this on teh interwebs: Just how green was the city's climate change event? – Birmingham Post – "West Midlands Friends of the Earth said the city council would be unable to plan properly to reduce environmental damage in future if it did not have an accurate understanding of carbon emissions created by today?s leisure events" Bigger Picture: Part 2 Should the library stay or go? – Birmingham Post (bounder in the propper paper, shock) – I love the Central Library. There, I?ve said it. The way the storeys fold out above you like some impossible stack of books, each larger and more crammed with knowledge than the last, is a view of wonder, a triumph of design and engineering over gravity

A twitcher’s history of Perry Barr

Superbly evocative nostalgia, for me anyway I remember this bird well, from Andy Mabbett: As a child, I was often taken to our local shopping centre in Perry Barr, north Birmingham (since replaced by a tin shed with pretensions of being a mall) to see a Mynah bird (Acridotheres tristis). It resided in what I now realise was a ridiculously small cage, on the counter of a petshop, and would delight all and sundry by asking repeatedly, “Where’s George?”, wolf whistling, or performing another of its many acts of mimicry.
