Brutal, man

Brummie Architect John Madin designed the Central Library, the Post and Mail building, and a number of garage extensions in Yardley. In 1965 the BBC made a documentary about him as part of a series called Six Men, it’s now online on Google video.

As well as being interesting in itself, it does feature some lovely shots of late sixites Brum and provides some background on the man behind the building the Council seem so intent on wiping from our landscape (the Library, not the garages).

  1. Great find. I’ve been wanting to see this for years! Cheers.

  2. Ditto! It has been hard to track down because there were legal problems after the original broadcast.
According to the programme’s director Philip Donnellan:

“During editing Madin chipped and chiselled at every Cutforth [Rene Cutforth, the narrator] comment, with hints of withdrawal, until the programme was virtually a promotional piece for the John Madin practice.”

Madin was eventually told off by the RIBA for ‘improper advertising’.
