The Digbeth tours start at different times during the day Wed 17 Oct - Fri 19 Oct, from the Wild Building, Floodgate St. The City Centre tours are Sunday only, 10 30 and (I think) one thirty. They start from the Baskerville monument outside Bask House. The Digbeth tour is "rougher". hand painted signs, self made metal signs, all sorts really. City Centre is a bit more polished; terracotta, engravings, stone &c., then dips into JQ industrial zone. Also a Baskerville tour on Sat 12 30 from outside Museum, Chamberlain Sq. Each is £10, via www.youplusus.net, booking advised / essential. Already booked up? Leave your name and I'll do some more tours to satisfy any demand.

[...] John Bounds goes for a walk and a long chat with Ben Waddington who’s running the Type Tours this week around Birmingham. “The type-tours aren’t just about signs that are ‘printed’, the Digbeth one in particular will be as interested in hand painted notes and other letter-forms. You can talk about theory, but often you can only guess at the intended purpose of so much of it - in a way the tours will be a conversation. If people want to disagree with me, that’s okay.” [...]

You're right Rich, I accept that each year that passes is the best ever for music - as there's all of the stuff from the past, plus the new great stuff - but it's a different cultural landscape now. Any city-defining scene would be unlikey to reach the mainstream and remain cool in the way that Manchester's did in the eighties and early ninties. You can't reach the Smash Hits TV generation and the alternative people with the same stuff - there's no culture-clash TOTPs, no Chart Show, not even any radio station that would play all of the stuff.

The problem of the narrowcasting technological breakthoughs it that so little of the great stuff has even the slightest chance to become mainstream. cf that dreadful Big Brother girl with her "there's this new music sweeping the nation - and it's called indie" promouncement.

"I also think that the days of music as the defining cultural force of a city are gone, splintered by downloads"

Whilst there are lots of good bands in the area, I thinkt he really creative stuff is happening in the way that the boundaries of what is possible in the live arena are now being fully explored in the ways that recorded music has been in the past.

The distribution of recorded music has made it possible for us all to appreciate many different kinds of music which - up until not that long ago - we would never have heard.

The live arena offers the chance to get people out of their living rooms, and engaging personally with the music and with other people, particularly if we challenge and push forward from the traditional gig format.
