Prix out

Is a (unlikely) return for the Birmingham Super Prix a good idea? No says West Midlands Friends of the Earth spokesman Chris Williams “Birmingham City Council are promoting double standards. On some days, the City Council is claiming that it wishes to become a world leader in tackling climate change and being green all round.

“Right now, what we are seeing is instead of the City Council trying to wean people off their addiction to the motor car, it is putting effort into glamourising driving more and faster.”

Quote from The Stirrer.

Not being a fan of motor racing anyway, I don’t really want it back either. Why not a Birmingham Marathon, 26 miles 385 yards ending in front of Brasso the Bull?

That said, when we do get a summer, we’ll be able to see the ‘Super Prix’ again - it appears spelled out in flowers all along Bristol Street.

All quiet on the Brum front?

It’s gone very quiet everywhere recently, I suppose people are either off on holiday or sheltering from the rain. There doesn’t seem to be much Brum news about, the Post are still wittering on about the Big Screen, the Mail well who knows mostly full of who Blues might be buying, the TV obsessed by the floods.

So if you like, you could head over to the BiNS forums and do your own wittering. Or if you’re a facebook type, some kind soul (not us) has set up a BiNS group (you have to be logged in to see it I think).

Of course, I might be wrong and there might be loads going on - but I’ve been too wrapped up in Talk Like a Brummie Day to notice. Feel free to enlighten…

Friendly local rivalry

The Blues are, rather foolishly in my book, asking people to sign a petition on the government petitions website to try and help get a new stadium. Some hope of that.

How did I find out about that? From this lovely article on a villa blog.

Tell you what, those clowns of the Small Heath Alliance over the South side of the City have been on the funny juice again. Not happy with their Meccano ground as it is, they are asking Joe Public to sign a petition to the Government, to support a new stadium in the Birmingham City boundaries, so that they can have a nice new ground to play football in.

Good to see all right thinking sports fans are thinking rightly about the project.

Digbeth - then and now

Nice article and photos of BS - that’s before Selfridges - from Include Digital Blog

internal error

Over last couple of days I’ve had trouble getting to the council website - both at home (where I wanted to look up something about noise complaints) and at work (where the ‘Birmingham Bulletin’ excited me with tales of Recycler the Rapping Robot). Intermittently it’s throwing a lovely page that just says “Error 500″ - and of course I can’t even get to the website to see who to tell.

Anyone else having problems?

Get inside

Birmingham Conservation Trust has announced that you can have a tour round Curzon St Station (on Saturday 8th Sept) and Newman Brothers Coffin Factory (on Sunday 9th Sept) as part of Heritage Open Days. Places are limited, get booking if you fancy it.

Geek news

Omega Sektor the LAN gaming centre (in the old virgin megastore) opens its doors on August 10th. It will be “Europe’s premier centre for competitive and professional gaming”, apparently.

Rail fair?

BBC NEWS | England | West Midlands | Kelly in £120m New Street pledge

UP to £120m is expected to be given to a project to transform Birmingham New Street station…the scheme is mainly concerned with the station’s appearance, and the shopping facilities above the platforms.

Just what we need, more shopping facilities - a good few of the actual shops on New St are empty or temporarily occupied. Couldn’t we have £40M to re-open the Moseley - Kings Heath line (sorry, can’t find a link to the info about this - let me know if you have one) and actually increase public transport usage rather than just conspicuous consumption?

I’ll bet they money “comes out of different budgets” or something, and while New St could do with a right refurb - transport itself could do with being the priority I reckon.

Dog bites man

There’s now a campaign site and online petition to help the Spotted Dog in Digbeth fight its noise abatement order:
Helping keep Digbeth alive!

It might not be enough to sign up - councils aren’t the greatest at listening to online polls - there are links to further information on the site and if you feel strongly enough you might take the time to write to the council yourself.

Balderdash and Blartin’

After a hectic week rushing round promoting TLAB Day (I’ve just this minute got back from doing Radio Five on a show with Danny Kelly*) can we relax here? Course not.

One of the legacies of TLABD, we hope will be an online Brummie dictionary - there were hundreds of phrases added to the TLABD site and it would be such a shame to lose all that work. So we’ve set up a wikipedia-style ‘Brummie dictionary’ for all of the good people of the interweb to contribute to.

It’s empty at the moment, although we’ll start to shift the submitted stuff across asap, so if you want to get in first and make sure it’s your definition of ‘crash’ (as in the rocks) that makes it - get over there. In true wiki stylee if you search for something and it isn’t there, you’ll be given the chance to add it yourself. There’s a link to the proper wiktionary help pages on the site should you get stuck.

*Fascinating (and possibly untrue) fact from that link, Danny was once briefly married to Hazel O’Connor.
