brummies speak up

Birmingham: It's Not Shit loves Birmingham and has loads of news and features. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed.

Birmingham Voices Against Poverty is a blog and a series of podcasts of one hundred brummies who want their voices against poverty heard - run by the Birmingham branch of Oxfam. It’s nice to hear such a variety of accents…

Puppetry of the puppets

Dynamics Press Launch, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham : Originally uploaded by amyclarke_uk.

These great huge things will be scaring the living heck out of small children over the weekend at the mac - as part of the two days of the Dynamics International puppet festival (that we’ve mentioned before).

The Uncle Albert out of Fools and Horses look-alike is Kind Fiddle-Dee-Dee. A slightly smaller fella, Pépé (who does paintings lucky children), is appearing at the BBC in the Mailbox on Friday - should you have a marionettey-itch that won’t wait till Saturday.

Brum music scene’s trip to the beach

<

Link for feed readers:YouTube - Either Way Remix - The Twang feat. Mike Skinner & Pro GreenBrummie nextbigthing The Twang, with Mike Skinner (The Streets) - surprisingly good. Most of The Twang’s stuff is a bit too retro for me, and I thought that Mike Skinner had truly lost it after the (inevitably weaker, but more popular) second album.

It could really have done with the video being on one of of city’s FIVE beaches, rather than on Brighton’s (there’s no sand there, perhaps we’ve nicked it all).

Brummie women reject outdated beauty contest

Would have been the far more sensible headline for this story: BBC NEWS | England | West Midlands | Brummie girls ‘not pretty enough’ (not singling the Beeb out here, they’re just so much easier to link to than the Sunday Mercury, say Edit: found it).

The clue is in the quote from the contest organisers “no one [suitable] applied”.

He’s from Sheldon, you know.

This has got to be the most obscure lookalike ever. I’m sure this guy must be more expensive than getting the real Howard!

and, it’s just a black bloke with comedy glasses on…

awful! he’s halfway down page, below herman munster

If Birmingham were Venice

Now that’s something for the council to try for next summer.

Edwards No.8 - No more! : Originally uploaded by cactusinthesea.

The demolishing of Edwards No.8 is well under way. Sad to see the guts being ripped out of a building. At least the external walls are to be retained.

far away stars

Oddness abounds at the Broad St walk of fame thingy, where people are voting for Cliff Richard on the grounds that:

He has played the NIA many times in his career and made it home to the massively successful Pro-Celebrity Tennis tournaments throughout the 90’s

Just an opinion, but can’t we wait till we’ve run out of Brummies before we start ‘honouring’ any old leather-necked celebrities, just because they’re guaranteed to turn up at the proverbial opening of an envelope?

Vote for Tony Butler.

old news

Flying Saucer is a new blog to me, which has some Brummie bits. Particularly some photos inside the big yellow retro clothes shop up Digbeth that I’ve never quite gotten round to going in.
