Birmingham: It's Not Shit loves Birmingham and has loads of news and features. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed.

As part of the site revamp we’ve added tweets from onBirmingham to the sidebar, and would like you to join in:

Twitter is now pretty much established as the place where news can break most quickly — when news happens it’s becoming more and more likely a Twitterer will be somewhere nearby, or be one of the first to hear it.

But unless it’s huge World news whether you hear it quickly is dependant on who you’re following. If you’re not following the ‘newsmaker’ then you’ll wait until someone you do follow mentions it, or until a blog or even a newspaper picks it up (queue the “Twitter is fast at news” news story). Thing is for the more niche or local story that may never happen. Which is where the idea behind onBirmingham comes in.

It’s been going for about 18 months and with 300 odd news items it seems to work, but it could do with more people tweeting in.

Here’s how it works:

  • The @onBirmingham Twitter account retweets (with attribution) direct messages (DMs) sent to it.
  • It can only get DMs from people that the account is following, so there can’t be any spam.
  • onBirmingham will only follow those it trusts, and if they use the service to spam, then they’ll be unfollowed — it’s as simple as that.

So, follow onBirmingham to get the news, and if you’d like to help make the news send the account an @ message and it’ll follow you back.

The Twang for ArtsFest

28 July 2010
By Jon Bounds

Some will be pleased, some will vomit, some will think it's not such a bad choice even if they don't really like them. Some will wonder where the heck a 'Centenary Square Stage' is going to go.

Would of been able to tell you sooner but the Artsfest blog has no RSS feed and the Twitter is unresponsive (and piped from Facebook).

Dogging up King’s Heath

By Jon Bounds

Pointed out on Twitter over the weekend is that the opening titles of Childrens’ ITV ‘classic’ Woof! (plot: boy turns into dog at inopportune moments — Billy’s Boots with more fleas) are set in luscious King’s Heath.

The dog wanders down the High Street and surprises a vicar who’s hanging around the toilets on the corner of Vicarage Road. Also the setting for this classic bit of filming.

i've just heard that Kojak's famous visit to town is being restored and cleaned up for HD and a showing on Sky Arts in December. Only five months until we can see the "multi-carriageway motorway" and dally in Dale End all future. More news as and when, until then enjoy the standard (or lower) definition version:

Cllr Philip Parkin points out a proposal and consultation on shifts of power around Birmingham City Council… with possibly more power centralised:

Robert Butler may write for "more intelligent life", but he hasn't watched TV recently

"civic pride in its theatres, galleries, concert halls, conservatoire and ballet company has to contend with the Brummie accent, associated with stodginess and despondency. When pigs feature in British TV commercials, they tend to speak Brummie."

Pigs? where?

Londonderry/Derry seemed to have an advantage in the city of culture contest – Birmingham Post

Good piece by Jon Walker. We'll never know the real reasons behind the choice I shouldn't think, but I do think it's been a worthwhile bidding exercise this time.

PR we can't be bothered to rewrite

BiNS is mostly by Jon Bounds, a Birmingham based social web consultant, producer and writer. You can hire him to work on your stuff, or follow him on twitter. There's also the odd bit of stuff from Danny Smith.

If you've got gigs to promote, best to chuck them on the talk board.
